Flight Pond - Tree Felling. What could possibly...

After working trees alone for as long as can be remembered, I find that a grappling hook and long length of light but strong rope proves to be indispensable. Quite easy to direct a leaner (within reason) when you have hooked into the top third of it. Most of the time they can be hand-pulled in just about any direction you choose provided that you hinge them for that direction. Much easier with a partner on the rope as you are cutting or sometimes just tied to your truck. Put a little tension on the rope and when you see your cut open a bit you should be able to pull it on over. If alone with no truck, when your cut just starts to close, pull the saw and give your rope a strong pull. Not a perfect solution but when are things ever perfect.

in my younger days it was far easier.... just place a 'kicker' charge up in the tree to direct the fall when you blew out the bottom.... the joys of explosives :) however if you screw up you get a lot of kindling :)

If you have two pulleys and a long rope, you can multiply the effect of a winch on the tree of the land rover winch without burning the battery?

Don't ...

I have a Tirfor hand winch and 50m of steel cable.

I also have a bag of blocks and things.

Disaster beckons....

Go for it! I've been winching up small trees (with an A frame) that the wind decided to blow down. I'm surprised no one has suggested wading in with the chainsaw, that really would be dangerous.

Yes, I am resolved to wait for the Farmer to hoik it out with a tractor.

The winch is electric and fairly new, and it would be shame to bugger it up on a 'fools errand'.

The offending tree came off its hinge quite nicely, I was trying to 'wedge it over' onto dry land but the backwards lean was just too much and she just fell at the water's edge.
If the winch is any good and properly fitted, and more importantly you know how to use it properly, it will pull that little tree out of there no bother at all. The biggest problem with vehicle electrical winches and drag winching is the user thinking its simply a matter of clipping the hook on.

Keeping the engine running at a medium revs and using snatch blocks and good belay points and even a cascade system means that these little electric vehicle winches have considerable potential but don't ever rely upon them to hold a load in suspension. Also they are not designed for long continuous use. They are a very useful tool but they have their limitations.

I have just l loaded the truck with the Tirfor, and all the stuff I bought when I had a 'must buy winch stuff' moment.

What's the worst that could happen?

Tune in tomorrow night and find out...😜

I have fitted lots to caravan artic trailers, rigids and land rovers. The failure is as you state also toy wiring,
cheap fly lead plugs cheap cable etc.
The biggest error is the person who buys the cheap stuff, also understanding how 2:1works....

Around this way there is a 4wd Ford Tractor with a Scammel belly winch bolted to a frame with 1" laid cable and a set of 3 blocks and spade feet...every thing came out...took time but it came.

Looks like you've got some useful kit there mate that should do the job. Do you have a means of attaching the cable off your vehicle winch to the Tirfor wire cable, something like a wire rope gripper (Coni clamp - slip lock) ?

I have to admit that I used to love recovery and winch work, or just moving big heavy things with the winch. Much preferred proper hydraulic winches though.
What really used to bug me though was when some idiot run the cable off the drum because they weren't watching what they were doing.

Just googled 'coni clamp" ...no.:-|

There are D-Locks, Snatch-blocks, ropes, and a host of stuff I have no idea how to use correctly.

I will be pleased if I can remember how to load the Tirfor up.

Will lay it all out on the plot tomorrow, and see if I can come up with a plan.🤓

If you are going to do much with steel winch cables a Coni clamp can be a very useful tool to have. It would enable you to attach your soft winch cable on your vehicle winch to the Tirfor cable.

The worlds unluckiest man goes winching 😂😂😂

This is going to be a must read, we need lots of pictures, I will get my biccies ready for it 👍

On a plus note, winching is seriously satisfying and not as difficult as most people think.

On the subject of wood, my house relies solely on our log burner for heating (and a limited amount of cooking) I have spent my whole life felling and logging, plus scrounging other folks trees whenever I see them.
I try and keep a minimum of 2 yrs logs in front of me at any one time and really enjoy the whole process, relaxing with my feet up in front of the fire with dogs on the rug is the final reward 👍👍👍👍👍
