Fox Red Labs vs Black Labs

I've got four all different shades all have pros and cons. Don't read into anything all my dogs do what I want just in a different style

Thank you all, interesting reading. I'm not looking for one imminently but researching my best options for when the time comes. Cheers all.

I think it all depends on the individual dog over colour, I've seen chocolates work better than yellows and red fox labs work better than black labs but then you look at someone else's gun dog pack and it's all change again.
Silver labs are just a weimaraner x lab lol no doubt someone had an accidental puppy litter and decided silver lab sounded better to sell them

Me old gaffer got one seen it about 3 months ago a liked it …… am a springer man but don’t stop me admiring other dog he looked fit for purpose don’t work him just a pet but a rite Bonny dog 👍

I prefer the appearance of the fox reds, and they'd be better camouflaged where I shoot.
Bizarrely, the deer don't seem to be spooked when they see my black lab. I have shot several that we have bumped into on the way back to the car and they seem transfixed by the dog and ignore me. Fatal mistake. Dunno...

Unless that colour happens to be chocolate.

Just like white German Shepherds I’ve yet to see a chocolate lab that had any degree of working drive between its ears.

Black, yellow or fox red labs off decent proven working parents tend to only be limited in their capabilities by the level of training put into them.

Pick your black, yellow or fox red lab pup on character and personality over colour.

Whilst not usually one for broad sweeping generalisations, every chocolate that I have ever met has not appeared to have much of anything between its ears. Including my grandfathers (which he always referred to as "liver" coloured; a regional thing perhaps?)

🤣. crikey that’s torn it. get yer hard hat on brother, you may have incoming 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Colour is immaterial. Yellow seems counterintuitive but I’ve yet to see any difference. In autumn they blend in well. I loved my blacks but after 2 wanted to avoid trying to duplicate image0.webp

I've always had black labs but when keepering have seen many fox reds and yellows. Like Theroedeerguy says, I've yet to see a really good chocolate lab. I'm sure there may be the odd one but as far as I have seen all colors work much the same except for the chocolates

By the law of averages there has to be a decent one somewhere but the majority of them are pretty gormless and don’t tend to be kept in full time working homes.

Three labs, one yellow, one black and one chocolate, come to an old stone wall while out for a walk.
The yellow dog runs along the wall and goes round it.
The black dog jumps and scrabbles up and over it.
The chocolate keeps running into it till it knocks it down.

That’s the difference 😄

I’ve had many over the years still have 3 , 2 black one red
Indy my red bitch is just that little bit different can’t put words too it but she is . I rehomed her at 1 yr old she’s had 2 litters and is pushing 11 now she just gets me what ever discipline we are doing . Mainly stalking these days hoping to get another pup in the new year which will learn all the disciplines they’re so biddable will it be black or red who knows ??
