i dont really understand why you would geta doggor a specific role that the dog wasnt breed todo.
i can understand having a dog for one pupose and trying to get it to do another as well but if you want a deer tracking dog why not start with one thats got it in the dna?
Yeah but do remember Stag hounds where not uncommon before all this hunting with dogs was started . A true hound really isnt at its best without a pack though

I suspect a lone foxhound would be a PITA as a walk with stalking dog and perhaps less efficient than our regular stalking dogs . The strength of a foxhound is best seen when its part of a pack . The strength of a balanced pack is what hounds are all about . I have seen a fair few hound x lurchers but normally as a tiny pack of 2 or three but they just dont perform like a pack and they are" hound crosses" of course not true hounds . Sad but in the UK its all over, glad i had the experience and sorry the lines are now broken . Heck a lot of our human members are in a box under the ground now .
Dogs and hounds are the same animal ( Canine ) but then they are very different . never seen one used but on the same count i feel ( again i can only speak of true hounds that now are not a thing) a lone hound would be pretty useless as a stalkers " dog" indeed a lesser used gamble of dog breed like a Border Collie would likely be better ( btw the collie tends to be very gun shy ) i used it just as comparison not suggestion. Labs , Bavarian , GWP, Catahoula etc are better choices by a long way
It had me come over all unnecessary and quite emotional. But then I was fortunate to have lived through the best of it and seen and enjoyed all hound hunting.
As I often say to my friends of my age, we have been lucky to have enjoyed the best of the last of the best of it, before the polititians spoiled it all for us, and those coming after us .
Ah the sounds of a pack of hounds in full cry two hours high off the river in the Vic mountains culminating in the sound of two shots echoing forever through the tops make for days as such to be never forgotten.
Before you lot start with "two shots ffs" I will add that after i knocked the stag with one shot and I was climbing back to the spur top for walkie talkie reception I shot a hind also...big day out in the rain it was.
It is going to be a very sad day when the final nail is in the coffin re the use of hounds on game in Victoria is hammered in.
