Foxing on land unsuitable for centrefire?

Another vote for trapping, I can’t shoot foxes at home as only a couple of acres bordered by a road and neighbouring property. I’ve trapped over 30 in 5 years though.

I use the 20 grain CCI hollow point in the 17 HMR to the head or bib, keep the ranges below 80 yards they do the job. Don’t like side on shots to the chest can get runners but the dog finds them.

I've just dealt with a severs fox problem around a smallholders yard. Foxes were shot at ranges from 12 to 30 yards with a 22LR. First priority is that backstops need to be sorted. You can bait against a couple of sandbags if nothing is suitable already. If you have a trail camera set it up so you know when they come, you may be surprised at what you see.
What has been said about the 17HMR is correct, shot placement is critical. A 22LR is more forgiving but art ultra-close range they tend to pencil a bit but the fox will drop within a few yards if a chest shot is taken. By the way, I wouldn't use HV 22 ammo, stick to subs at that range.
If there are cars about you can use yours as a hide, if not, stables make excellent places to shoot from, you should be able to get the foxes to go where you want them too, by baiting.
Nice to see an advocate of the humble .22 for foxes Old keeper. When I was a teenager I used to go after them with a small motorcycle lamp & 6 volt battery attached to the Krico .22. Shot placement is everything, zeroed at 70 yards it would kill them with subsonics, I had more runners with Hares than I ever did with foxes. Hated hv rounds, all bark & fart, & huge groups too!! Still got a pack of those CCI Stingers in the safe, been there for 40 years.
