Freelander 2 - what to look for?

ours has stop start, it only ever works with a new battery, or after a 200 mile run,
battery needs to be fully charged,
This. With the orginal battery being 10yrs old, it's unlikely to hold enough charge for the stop start to kick in. If replacing battery, you'll need to check (from an authoritative source, not a teenager in Halfords who likes to say yes) that the type you buy is suitable for stop start....if it's a function you care about.

Bit of a coincidence, looking at a FL2 2014 just now. Only issue is stop start not working - still on original battery. It's in good order full service, cam belt done, all passes on the MOT. Just having but reading the above then writing this, I think I'll buy it! 5k, which seems fair for age, spec and mileage - 150k
The stop start will stop working if the battery performance has dropped, when we changed the battery it started workin

Hi.
Fwiw.
I advise people when looking to buy a different motor to look at the tyres. If it has cheapo Chinese ones, then it has likely been run on a tight budget.

I know what you are saying - but I never skimp on a service, and always buy cheap ish tyres but check the stopping rating before I do. After that, I’m not too concerned.

Hi.
Fair enough, i do take your point in that it may not be applicable in every case. It's not a bad place to start weighing up a vehicle though.

Loads of quality YouTube vids, done by proffessional, that show just how bad cheap tyres are.

My Jeep, 17 years old has Michelin and my Astra at 19 years old has Michelin.

You are right I expect! I’ll have a watch of those and perhaps it’ll be good tyres from now on! I expect it’s false economy anyway as they maybe don’t last as long either.

This one had a swathe of proper history with little more than 6k per year between services, but he’s had all 4 feet shod in a random brand and they look brand new. He hadn’t done many miles so perhaps he thought just not worth it and to get it mot’d. I hope it isn’t a sign of bad looking after, the rest of it looks pretty good order.

Hi.
Just one test, comparing a summer tyre that you would find on most saloon cars including the BMW 3 series tested.

The cheap tyres were the 'Goodtrip' brand. Chinese manufactured. In the wet braking test it took ten metres longer to stop than a Continental tyre.

Ten meters could be a big accident.

Thanks for the thought on the battery. What about the auto v manual? I'm happy driving either, I know the clutch is a pain to change, how reliable are the auto boxes?

Even with a brand new battery last year, ours has never had this - do you have a button to press to override it when it’s working? Had a loaner D4 that had it & recall a button on the centre console? - have you got any pics? what model is yours? ours is an HSE but aware there were other ‘speced’ models that had a few extra bits on.

Never had a problem with mine although it’s easy to “reset” the electronics if it does get a bit jumpy with a sequence I cannot remember but is readily available on Google. After 80k on the FL2 box and 40k now on the Discovery Sport I would never go back to a manual :thumb:

I’m looking for good things about the manual having bought one! But it isn’t a daily driver for me so I’ll manage…

Did you find another one veterinary?

Picking mine up tomorrow it’s in the specialist today having a Haldex service and cam belt and water pump, and an oil change.

Seen I should also have had a rear diff and ptu oil change but they look simple enough to do myself.

Having waved the Duster away on Sunday to a very friendly member on here I’m ready to get it home!

Anyone know anything about fitting some sort of CarPlay, I expect a plug-in addition rather than strip down and fit into the existing module?

I removed the existing radio head unit and fitted a double-DIN Pioneer unit in its place with a InCar Tec interface kit. This gave me full wired CarPlay with steering wheel controls, etc, and then I added a wireless CarPlay dongle. Mine was a 2011 pre-facia update HSE and I kept the top Sat Nav screen which still ran as a Sat Nav and showed my reversing camera. The interface kit was as much as the Pioneer unit but as the FL2 had the high spec audio system all of the bits were connected by fibre-optic so it s not as straight forward as you may think. Worked brilliantly for me.

Looks great! Mine only has the 5” screen (although it’s a facelift model 2013).

Still looking! no rush. COnsidering duster or yeti, it just needs to be something I don't worry about getting dirty!
Had no complaints about my duster other than towing capacity. You’ll get a much newer duster for the money. Pretty nice to drive tbh.

That link is golden. Thank you. Was it a nightmare to fit?
