Freelander 2

I had a Freelander 2 for a few years and the door latches went down twice, a fuel sender busted ( big job as needed to remove the fuel tank to get to it) and the Haldex pump had to be replaced .
All very expensive jobs, so I wouldn’t say is a reliable car, although is nice to drive and quite capable off road.
I’m on a 21 plate RAV4 now and is a totally different ball game …

Interesting - mine’s an auto and I think they do much better off-road. Agree that they can be thirsty but I use the cruise control on long runs and that greatly improves the figures.

Our manual does low 30 - mid 30's (not measured just the car computer) but that is mostly local journeys on country roads). I've seen high 30's on longer runs.
My brother always told me if you want an auto you might as well get a Rangerover as the mpg is similar!
 
I've had 2 and loved them. Got rear diff bearings replaced and LR stumped up half the cost even though it was out of warranty.
Last one was a 2011 and was just getting to the point it needed money spending on it, but wear items like bearings etc. which TBH you can expect with a heavy car. That was last January
Boot was cavernous, and it would go most places other 4x4 wouldn't.
Ignore the LR rubbish that's talked about, look after it and it will look after you.
Just try and get the newest you can.
Also there's a great Freelander 2 forum.
All cars regardless of manufacturer have problems.
You only hear the bad things from people who have a problem, not the majority who don't and who silent.
 
id go for a yeti 4x4 fantastic motor its like dr who,s tardis inside so much room one of the best cars ive ever had bs
 
I had a Freelander 2 Colin, actually quite a capable little beastie with the right tyres on it - and pretty good on the road (mine was a Td4) the main issue was the Haldex units (plenty to read about on them here -https://www.haldexrepairs.co.uk/land-rover-freelander-2-fl2-range-rover-evoque-haldex-fault-finding-problems-solutions/ ) and with mine the clutch started slipping just ever so slightly - the lack of low range was a bit of a pain but only if you need it for shunting trailers etc.

Not wanting to hi Jack the thread - has anyone on here done the freelander boot out for stalking- dogs etc. I use a trans K9 single box but as I will be keeping it forever - wonder if anyone had pimped their FL2 up for a hunting bus
 
I got my FL2 in four years ago when I went to pick up a battery for my 2002 Volvo V70 and saw it on the dealer's forecourt, I kid you not. I say my FL2 very tongue in cheek because it's now driven mostly by my wife.

It's a 2014 SD4 Metropolis and had a tad over 16k miles on it back then, now has just over 60k. It's refined on roads, returns 32mpg on runs and is very capable off road but I have a Terrano 2 that I use as a shooting wagon, so it's only seen a small amount of off road use at the moment. I'm going to get the belts and water pump done soon and I'm also looking into having the Haldex off and fully serviced. I've done all the other standard servicing myself. I like it a lot and it's a keeper.

I operate with the LR dog guard and load space divider in the boot to create a cage for my Vizsla (left-hand side) and a smaller removeable cage to the right for the Teckel. There's space above the Teckel's cage for gralloch kit, etc and to its right, there is space for LED work lights, fire extinguisher, ratchet straps, etc. I fold the rear seats down and use a large capacity Homebase storage box (with 12v chiller let into the top) accessed from the rear passenger side, my rifle slip goes between that box and the raised forward portion of the rear seats, to the rear of the box I fit my 2 sand mats, on the left side of that box (driver's rear door) I fit a removeable ATV MTM box with shackles, snatch block, shovel, strops, tyre sealant, etc, and beneath that, across the rear footwells, I fit my ground stakes, tailgate gralloch strut and other loose sundries. My stalking clothing, bino harness and a range bag sit on top of the ATV "recovery" box. It's tight but it all stays put when I bounce it around off road and the dogs are safe in their holes. However, this is my normal fit for roe and muntjac and the front seat is totally clear for passengers (trainees). For local fallow, I replace the box with a tray but that means all the other kit has to go into the front passenger footwell - not ideal:( For more than one fallow/red, I attach a trailer :cool:

I'd love 1 mate, but with going down to 1 car the missus has said no on the looks front. Funny though she likes the look of the FL 2 🤔

Yea an auto is not for me I'm afraid. Manual only.
 
You'll either get a trouble free one or one that will be a nightmare and cost a small fortune. Either way they're a delight to drive and surprisingly capable off road. My wife bought a 2013 190bhp HSE just over 3 years ago with 42k miles. It was, unfortunately, one of the ones that caused all manner of nightmares. First thing that went was the exhaust manifold- a torture of sheared bolts. Next was the steering rack- complete replacement. Next was the turbo actuator- luckily an aftermarket part rather than full LR turbo replacement. Next was the cpu in the driver door- replace. Next was the door latch- replace. Next was the turbo hose- replace. Next was the driver window motor- replace. Next was the Haldex unit- luckily I caught it early and it was only a filter replace. Next was I convinced the wife to sell and buy a lovely Skoda Kodiaq 4x4 which is bigger, as comfortable and capable off road for what she needs. She traded the LR in for the same money she bought it for. It was one of the most miserable, least well thought out, over engineered lumps of metal I have ever had the displeasure of owning and working on... but my goodness was she a nice driving wagon.

Mines an auto, I get around 30mpg around town , 37-40 if I drive it like a Nun, and around 27 with the quad and trailer on the back..
