French boar weekend

Off for another 3 day driven hunt with the association where I am a member.
Friday was one long drive for 4 hours - foggy, freezing and not an animal seen by me in all that time - two boar and three roe were shot but that is very poor for this forest and 30 hunters posted out. Back at the hunt house, as everyone ate and drank, the talk went round to low boar numbers this season.
Sat morning I decided to be super optimistic - was second from the last in a line of 18 down the side of a forest block. In front of me was quite open woods for about 40 meters and I could see right and left for probably 80+ meters. Was very ready from the moment of being posted as I though good chance a roe would move early in the drive. 5 minutes in I catch sight of an object weaving through the trees - nice boar heading my way, all alone, likely a male. I wait until it will cross me but it starts to turn away into the thick stuff - now or never- I shoot, it disappears. I spend the rest of the drive (2 hours) wondering if I hit or missed. Drive signalled as over by trumpet blasts and I go looking - 60 meters away a nice ( 85kg male) has piled up in the thick brambles. shot through the heart he made 15m from the shot site. Tough drag out. Biggest boar of the day.
Sunday - posted in front of a narrow ride 4m wide with really thick stuff either side. Little chance here I think - deer will cross too fast. 15 minutes into the drive I hear 5 trumpet blasts to my right ( the signal for boar sighted). next I hear a almighty crashing heading my way. First huge boar runs across in front of me and I leave it ( first one often the matriarch of the group), second one immediately after is smaller- I snap shoot as it charges across, gone followed by two more in the time I have worked the bolt. Once again the question - was the shot good ?, I get another chance but clearly shoot over it.
Hour later the drive is over - I walk down the ride to find the biggest blood trail I have ever seen. 15 metres into the wood the boar is pilled up, heart shot again and she is huge - just under 100 Kg, I wonder how big the one I left was !

Can I ask what calibre was your rifle and what rounds do you use
Was a 9.3x62. Sakko Hammer heads. I must admit the 9.3 does a very good job but still a question of shot placement. Over the year I have decided shot placement over caliber everytime. The nice thing with a relatively slow 9.3 is when I also shoot a roe it is not just a mess. Limited meat damage but a big hole

The driven hunt morning was organised by a hunter in our local organisation who is also a farmer. We met up at the farm at 08:15 for an early coffee and proof of having a valid Jagdschein control. There followed the greeting by the farmer with hunters luck being wished and stating that each shooter is responsible for their safe shots as the A3 Autobahn is nearby. The Aufbruch zu jagd signal was played by the jagdhorn group, myself included. Most all had brought shotguns as we had been asked to bring a minimum of two slugs on top of the shot shells normally carried. Myself and one other were carrying drillings mine was a 7x57R/16G Sauer over open sights I left the scope in the car. The hunt began at 09:00 with us being posted on a woods edge with the drivers, mainly young teens connected to the hunters doing the beating and shouting slapping sticks on the trees as they went through the wood. No shots were fired. Onto the next wooded area by slogging through the muddy fields then we repeated the above also no shots were fired, we were getting to wonder where the game were hiding. The farmer assured us that as we went on to the final drive that this one is the favourite of the boar and they had been showing up on the game cameras the previous days so full of hope we posted ourselves around this wood not expecting much, then out came a fox 25m away from me which I proceeded to miss then two minutes later out came another one on hyperdrive going in the same direction, I missed that one too. Then boom boom 5-6 shots ring out other side of the wood so think I we must have shot something. The hunt was at the agreed time stopped by jagdhorn signal as is the custom. The news was that nothing had been hit so we all traipsed back to the vehicles, my wellies by now weighing twice as much as at the beginning and we all drove back to the farmhouse to discuss our lack of luck and eat/drink. The jagdhorn group played the Jagd Vorbei signal (end of the hunt) and we all settled down to chat and eat as so is hunting here. The wurst were done well on the open fire and when stuffed in a fresh baked bun with mustard went down a treat as did the trays full of chocolate cake. We did a whip round for the beaters and we all gave 10€ each which was ceremoniously given to the beaters to share out. I left at 13:30 with quite a few enjoying the craic for longer. Well to add to this I then get sent a whatsapp message yesterday evening that some of the group had gone out again on Sunday, I had not heard about that one plus with supporting pics of the three decent boar taken. BTW I am the one with the long orange camo coat.
