gralloch

Nick hello,

The advice from John at Moray is spot on. There are many ways to do a gralloch, all I look for is that the end result is a clean carcass and that the stalker knows why they are inspecting the glands and organs, what could be a problem and, they don't cut their wrists, or mine in the process .
I do always bleed, it just makes sure that most of the blood is out of the carcass and we end up with a cleaner carcass for transport however, I am mainly dealing with roe deer and it is easier to suspend them than a hunking great red stag. Get stuck in :)

Good luck and best regards.

Jon.

+1 on John and Jon reply just relax and do it the way you normally do your grallach and inspection. I am sure you will not have a problem AW's are not ogres trying to find fault they are just overseeing that you are to the required standard. Lets face it you can not fail if something you do is not quite to standard then it's only one area to review.

I know what they are but it was a few years since I have done my dsc 1. I cant remember all the details. Its not like you do detailed anatomy on dsc1 mate. Why dont you teach me?

Errr,,,actually the DSC1 I did was very detailed. However, the BDS video is a good start if you can't get an AW or a mentor of some sort. I watched it 4-5 times before I attempted a gralloch and found that although it's not the be all and end all it gives a good grounding. Being a novice myself and not having the funds or access to an AW or mentor I found it was the way to go for me. Since starting in July I have had 6 grallochs and each has not been without it's differences, having seen this video several times and having other on site references to Lymph node condition has really helped (again thanks to the BDS). Having said all that, there has been no substitute for the practical experiance.
