Gun cabinet

Anyone know what the rules are for gun cabinets where you can see the guns inside?
The law just says to secure them as far as reasonably practicable. Easy enough to clad some steel in wood to create the cabinet but what about the Perspex/glass?

All joking aside, I have a client that has similar in his gun room, although the room itself is an inner room and intrinsically secure (as mentioned by Pedro). The door on the way in is steel and the (small) window is Georgian wire with (tasteful) bars for security - there are contactors and a pir detector linked to the house alarm. Essentially, the gun 'dresser' just has a wire security rope through the trigger guards - the glass doors are not locked but there is an ammunition digi safe in one of the cupboards below. Hampshire were more than happy with it - it's a nice room to which I aspire to have one day too!

Recon the cupboard is fine by the look of your picture but is it secure or just a show piece? Would its location be on show to any one who came into your dwelling? And if in the room of choice is that to be secured?
Not forgetting access through windows in the event of a break in. All said and done though, I have to say, I for one really do find shotguns and sporting rifles on display pleasing to look at don't you.

BC.

I should have put a link in so here it is Glass Wardrobe Gun Cabinet - The Bespoke Gun Cabinets Company

Police approved and they do others similar but smaller however the big one is £15k and the smaller ones are still £9k!
I think taking the spare room and doing the door and window would be the best bet. Much cheaper for a start and would certainly provide what I'm after.
Its largely immaterial as I rent at the moment but we're looking to buy soon-ish.

Just would be nice i think.

Well they do look nice, for sure. From their website: "Police approved cabinet with a 6mm door section, making it virtually impossible to break into." So perhaps they are more secure than they look. The problem of whether they are on show to casual visitors would remain of course. And if you have to have it hidden away in an upstairs room, then is there still a desire to have a glass fronted cabinet, when only you and the au-pair (!) can see it.

£14,995 ? Gulp. I see you're in Cornwall. Perhaps we could share postage to save a bit?

Good to know! I'm living in Hampshire and I'd like something similar for my man-cave as and when me and the Mrs move next haha :)

Though I would want the solid bullet proof glass/hidden metal enforcement on the main cabinet so it effectively becomes a glass fronted gun safe with decorative wood stuck on.

I looked into this as i'm an Avid wood worker as well as shooter. I was talking to a staff member in Harrods about this over Christmas as they now have a gun room with similar storage to what i wanted to make. As you say it would have to be a metal construction with wooden around it, but the glass is the tricky part as the idea of the gun storage is to keep guns hidden from people who enter the property for business (decorators, window salesmen etc). As somebody already said the best plan of action is to secure the room first. a Sturdy door, no windows and a very big lock. Some CCTV or an alarm on the door as well effectively turning the room into one giant safe which then leaves you free to display or secure the weapons however you like. The only downside is that your wife and anyone else in the household without right right firearms licence would not be allowed a key to the room.

For £9k or £15k, you'd be much better off saving the money for lawyers' fees. That's just a divorce engine!

Well I haven't cleared it with the au pair (she just does exactly what I tell her to) but the wife is fine with a gun room.
I know that they'll still be away from prying eyes behind a locked door so not much different to a safe but I like the rifle sea of a display case and there is no way the wife, or the au pair with her expensive tastes, would be happy with me spending £9k on an armoured cabinet!

Do you not have to do more than secure the door and window to create a gunroom? You could have impregnable doors/windows but plasterboard ceilings and walls which would take no time to breach. I've seen quite a few jobs where offenders had broken in through the roof, bypassing the nice steel doors and alarm systems usually!
