Gun storage with the Police...advice please.

All it takes is a 4” grinder and any cabinet is accessible in very short order.
You could hide in a wall in such a way noone would know otherwise. Make it as hard as possible worst case sinario. Our laws are pretty tight here also. Good luck getting mine. That's all I have to say on the matter. Bring a lunch 😁

If you don’t hand them over they just lock you up, pretty simple really!

Wow you can't even keep them at your home or elsewhere like a storage locker? That's excessive. If your a responsible gun owner they should cut you some slack.

You can, but if the police have asked you to hand them in/put them into storage, as seems to be the case with the OP, you have no choice but to comply.

Ordinarily for most firearms stored in an approved cabinet at your home or other agreed address is okay.

Well you only have to look at the comments above to realise just how responsible the police are in this country. The consensus view of law-abiding gun owners being that you can't trust them as far as you can throw them. Scandalous really, but that's what you get in a society where a certain caucus of people will protest vehemently and shout down any criticism of a public service.

When my FAC expired before I had my renewal through I was able to just store my cabinet keys with my RFD. No fees and just showed my new FAC to get the keys back. Didn't bother with the license extension as I wasn't planning on shooting during that time.

A very sensible and practical solution to the situation you were in at the time 👍

Hi
I dont really want to get involved or pry into your personal life but it sounds like you are in a difficult spot and lodging firearms with police could have some issues from what the other posters have said.
If its lack of funds that is preventing you from lodging your firearms with Bisley Armoury (or another RFD) I'd be happy to cover the costs for 12m if they are in the ballpark of what someone else suggested.
PM me if you'd like to do that.
D
That's very kind of you, I am temporarily sorted now. Many thanks though, much appreciated 🙂

Sorry all, haven't been on here for a while so had no idea I had been offered more help and advise and that this had turned into an interesting discussion. Apologies.

Just to clarify, I wasn't a bad boy....a very sudden pretty catastrophic life event had me contact both my GP and FEO as I was not quite 'feeling myself'. A very short timescale and very little money meant that I had to take them in to the police.

I totally understand how some members might be very anti my decision through a bad personal experience or anecdotal reports from others. However, in my case I was dealt with with total respect and compassion, reassured that they would remain safe/untouched and would be returned quickly subject to my GP re-assessing my suitability. Throughout my FEO has been supportive and extremely easy to contact.

For me, while I 'love' my guns and will be overjoyed to get then back in time (hopefully quite soon), I love other things in my life far more. So I was willing to trust my local police and have yet to regret it. Time will tell of course and I will update in the future so I can be told "I told you so" if needed. Hopefully not. But for now I'm focusing on other things...

Thanks for all the comments, advice and support SD. All the best, P 🙂

How did the police and RFD know you had stored all sets of your cabinet keys with the RFD?
Cannot see how that guarantee’s you are no longer in possession of firearms.

You're right, they have no way of knowing at all. Even if they could somehow confirm that they were my only set of keys, there was no guarantee that the guns were actually still locked in the cabinet.

I guess in my situation, the alternative could have been that I was issued with a temporary license extension and carried on shooting. So there wasn't really a requirement for me to no longer have access to my firearms.

I was just glad I didn't have to go through all the faff of moving my guns.

For the love of god DONT give the police your guns voluntarily. They will not give one care in the world about them and probably just through them about . Get any friend to get your rifles on their cert that one way. That guy that said bisley £85 a year that’s good . I use that and I am in Scotland . A day trip and £85

It may be a bit late by now but remove any rings and optics and mags and pack the action in grease and plug by way of a grease gun the barrel and copper bag them .

It's nice to know I'm far from the only one here who is wary of the police. I would never let them have anything of mine.

Hi @Sheprador1973 - just checking in to see how things panning out for you and hopefully you've been able to get sorted, get the guns back and they have been looked after and all is good?

If the harbingers of doom are correct, the guns were all dented, the scopes stolen, the ammunition used and the police will have lost at least one of the guns. Will be interesting to see if we get an update.
