Gun vice. Stable rest

Any of you guys got a rest that you can lock the rifle Into when shooting. As in it won't move so you could just adjust scope to point of impact and have a rifle zero in 2 shots rather than counting clicks etc. I'm not big into targets etc and just thought this would be a shot saver especially since I have a few guns and could be used between a few mates

It's not going to work. Or at least it should weigh dozens of kilos (you'd still had to reposition it to POI after the shot) and recoil action should be trackable.

Furthermore, single shot will tell you nothing, except with extremely precise shooter/rifle/ammunition combinations and even then the information / zero you get is less than the true precision of the system.

Just shoot few dozen shots with your rifle, preferably each shot to different POA (target with several bulls). You can track them later for groups, if you like. From there, you get an understandng how close the POI is to POA on average and in worst case. If you have a scope that doesn't have repeteable clicks, preferably to the specification (1/4 MOA, 0.1MRAD etc.) you'd be better off with new scope that does.

I have used one of these (borrowed from a friend) in the past to do what you're asking. It worked surprisingly well and if I had one myself I'd probably use it when setting up all rifles and scopes.

I didn't shoot off the rest, I shot as normal, prone off a bipod and rear bag. I then put the rifle in the rest, adjusted it until the crosshair was over the aiming point, then adjusted the scope until the crosshair was now over the hole.

I then shot the rifle again as normal off the rest and it was pretty much dead on.

Some things to bear in mind are that you still need to bore sight the rifle first to get it close to the target and then I'd want to shoot a couple of groups to confirm the average poi.

With ammo prices for copper bullets this rest could easily pay for itself in a couple of sessions.

Not what I was asking at all but thanks. I just want a rest to hold gun securely whil I shoot so I can sit back I same position and turn clicks until I get to point of impact. I assure you nothing wrong with the scopes. Its more me I'm more the person that gets someone else to zero and no interest in learning otherwise. Ammo 2 expensive to be throwing down range and I know rifle and ammo accurate it's just for changing scopes etc

That's perfect now you thinking the same way I am. I looking to conserve ammo and get zero with minimum shots. It would serve a few rifles and do a great job long aside a bore sight

This is the way to do it ^^^
You don't need a very heavy rest doing it this way. You can make your own from wood.

That’s ok if your on paper but you’ll be struggling otherwise.better bore sight it first and put a shot at 25 just to see where you are.

I agree with @nun_hunter and I think you are talking yourself into something you don't need (particularly when the sole reason was to save money). Like has been said, bore sight to be on paper then a bipod (or front bag) and a decent rear bag, or two sand bags, will hold the rifle plenty steady enough to track cross hair from centre of target to your shot, another shot will confirm zero (although I prefer a minimum of a couple of 3 shot groups to ensure consistency). It is the non electronic version of one shot zero on digital scopes. Not quite up to target shooting precision, but it does the job well when ammo is at a premium.

I bought one ages ago and for £30 you cant really grumble too much...
Similar to the one I use and no complaints for the price

Interested to try that, now I have read it...:-|
As long as the rifle doesn't move while you're moving the crosshair it's surprisingly good and accurate. Especially useful if you're not using gridded paper with accurate measurements to know how many clicks to move and you can't be bothered to walk 100m there and back😂

If you stop the recoil the rifle shoots worse generally . The dead sled was very popular but that allows for the forces of recoil but yet it is under the same control every shot ! You will however not shoot to the exact same point because of different human faults . I have a different from the normal position prone shooting , some say the wrong one but after many decades I am good enough to score better than many who have pointed out my " faults" .
recoil should be ridden not blocked imo!

It's not going to work.
and even if it did it would be useless.

The shooter is part of the zero as much as the rifle, sight and ammunition.

So if you "zero" with a contraption then your zero will be different unless you shoot off it all the time.

The rifle is affected by the forces you impart to it during shooting. If these change then the rifle will shoot to a different point. That is hard enough to manage between different positions ie prone standing etc without zeroing the rifle when artificially supported.

You don't use the rest to shoot from in this instance, just to hold the rifle while adjusting the scope. Much like a digital scope and the "one shot zero" method.

Bought a rest and have to give it the 5 stars it's great and steady strap rifle after shot and move to point of impact get zeroed a lot quicker and cheaper
