Gutting / Skinning Hook

I used to own a basic but very effective Gerber gutting/skinning hook and am looking to find something similar. The only approx equivalent I could find is the Gerber Gutsy freshwater fish gut hook. Firstly has anyone tried this hook on deer? Or can you suggest an equivalent that works and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The Gutsy is priced c £25. Thanks!

F.Dick Tripe knife.
Quite affective.

The knife gut hooks and Gerber I feel like would be tedious too keep sharp long-term, I can still see links for them for sale though Gerber I cant see why that wouldn't work on deer.

You might like some of the outdoor edge knives though, some have a blade and gut hook built into them so you can deploy whatever you need bit expensive £80-quid ish but having them combined into one unit is nice, plus blades can be swapped out whenever.

the f. dick is nice and thin holding a good edge and the steel makes it v sharp.

more than one way to gut a deer.

A friend brought a pocket full of these when he came stalking, gave me and guides one each. Work well on fallow. Cost about £2, good for a few deer.

I think we might have a few of those In the larder actually, we've definitely used them before on gutting deer we've brought back. 👍

I've seen someone use a Stanley with the hook carpet blade which was highly effective
But you still always need a flat blade to start it off/do the anus etc so once you have that in your hand you might as well just do the lot

They do a fixed blade version too. I have that one. It can be sharpened easily too.
Used it once and it worked well. But as said above you open up initially with a normal fixed blade so I just continued with that most times.
Only one knife to clean up that way.
Practice with your normal knife, use the finger under the tip method, take your time, it's not a speed gutting contest.

There are several makes of folding knives f.e. Switchblade offering a gutting blade together with the standard blade. All good and with 'fixed' gutting blade you use the forefinger method but reinforced. The trick is the ball at the top end of gutting blade. Will save from wrong handling and disastrous gutting. You push, with the gut hook you pull. Gut hooks ok for skinning small fur animals f.e. winter foxes.

The knife is not pointy enough for de ringing
Butt ! The un zipper is perfect wish I'd got one years ago . It's always last light in the woods and it gets dark fast .
For a hanging skin the next day it's lightningIMG_20250708_195058_418~2.webp

Thank you all for your valued input. It helps to ask those with experience! Besides learning a lot more than I set out to find out, I also picked up on a few suppliers I hadn't used before and who are now definitely on my shopping 'favourites' list!

Both options I use, the orange handled one was a present last year the other (second hand) I have used for the past 9 years.
