Gwp v Gsp

The Two dog breeds are very , very different . The fact they both are tagged " pointer " in the name is about it In my experience ( which i admit is mainly GWP ) of my own and others But the GSP s i have known are pretty much as one expects Pointing dogs for For Falconry or walked up shooting in a small group of guns on the moor etc with what exists there .
I hope you know a lot more about knife making than you do about HPR’s.
Jesus wept…..

so rather than just throw out criticism without a specific challenge to what is written in my post you make the above post ? Says nothing at all really, brings nothing positive with it and would be zero use to anyone trying to choose what dog to get .
I have had a GWP ( at that stage they where not very widely known or used here in the UK) and have known a lot of all different characters within the breed . I spent time Learning with Rory Major , I have observed quite a few GSPs but not owned a GSP to comment deeply on that breed , still if i wanted a pointer the wire would be ( for me and the experiances with the last ) way down the list if it even got on it . As for the GWP there are bound to be some brilliant ones , its just rarer than the poor ones at this point in time ( opinion based with personal experience)
Now there may be people who own a great GWP indeed its a certainty , Its quite telling though that John Halstead jnr offered his to me fully trained and experienced FOC over another Lab pup i came to look at and purchase a Lab ( i make no cover over my preference being Labs ) A different purpose for a different dog .
The man who is pretty the most respected dog man in the UK ( British FT team leader ) in our nation couldn't shut the thing up in the kennels . Not great if some of his other comp dogs copied it eh ? To be fair the one i had come to think of it was also noisy in the kennels but that thing howled on still nights clear nights, it was the least of his issues though as neighbours are a long way off . Unfair to tag it as a GWP common fault just thought it telling .
A person should choose the dog they want personally with open eyes , ignoring all sales pitches however well meant by a vendor . If you dont like what i typed counter it with the facts as you personally see it , not just a totally personal attack on a guy of which you know little facts wise

Yup ! Indeed . It also seems that lines of GWP that are known for being great soft pets have a lower prey drive
Hmmm, can’t agree with this. Both my GWPs are soft as cockerpoo in the house but will mix it up now problem with wounded deer. In fact the younger ones prey drive was a nightmare during training and still tries to get cats, squirrels, game birds , blackbirds, basically anything that moves and she can get her mouth at least partially around.

Don’t want to offend, but maybe you are mixing up prey drive with aggression/guard drive - which are separate drives and dogs may have one or the other or both. GWPs should have prey drive and not the guard drive, but for various reasons, some GWPs/ lines have both.

These dogs vary , i think that's the issue to be honest . I know exactly what your talking of but and i do know of examples of GWP of all kinds . The lines seem to be all over the place depending which nation , which line etc . The one i had was one of the early ones , soon after that kennel got a real reputation for over aggression.
Lets face it all breeds vary some but imho the GWP is very ,very mixed and yet breeds Like the Lab , springer spaniel etc etc are far more what it says on the label. I hear its also like that in Germany
If you have those that are just what you want that is great !

Perhaps I was a bit abrupt in my previous reply,
apologies no offence intended,
however….
The two dog breeds are not very different at all, check out both the breed descriptions and job descriptions.
They were frequently interbred, you can still put a pedigree GWP bitch to a pedigree GWP dog and produce a litter with very diverse coats, anything from very slightly shaggy to perfect moustache and whiskers GWP.
The smooth hair gene seems to be quite strong, I rarely see shaggy shorthairs with whiskers.
Regardless, all the pups will be registered according to their parents pedigree.
When it comes down to working, there’s no doubt that there are different strains, but the biggest difference is generally not down to the dogs, it’s the training and handler.
I have owned, trained and used several varieties of HPR, competed successfully in FT events and I also use my dogs for deer stalking. They can do both, but some dogs are better in some fields, to own and train a dog to excel in both areas is bloody difficult, it takes a lot of time, a lot of work, a good dog and a good trainer/handler.
Generally you will have to compromise.
That is totally up to you, you need to decide what YOU want, no one else can do it for you.
Its not the solely down to the breed, the handler and the training has a huge influence.
I don’t spend time trying to get a dog to do anything that it doesn’t really want to do anymore, it’s a waste of time.
That’s a long way to go about saying that the 2 breeds are very similar, some lines are at the outer end of the spectrum for both fur and feather, but on average, you should be able to train an average GWP or GSP to dog to perform adequately in any role.
The training is up to you.

My last dog was a GWP/GSP mix (although his appearance was pretty much GWP). He was the softest thing you could imagine; just wanted to make friends with everything and everyone but he was also very keen on hunting. Loved being out, did well finding carcasses and was naturally very soft mouthed.

My current dog is a pure GSP and has quite a different temperament. Far more energetic, runs much faster but is also more aggressive towards prey. He's not as gentle when picking up and wants to murder any deer carcass he gets near.

If it ever came down to catching an injured deer, both would have been competent but the GSP would definitely catch up quicker.
I have two GSP’s, half sisters different sire. The first one is 8 inches longer and 4 inches taller.(4years old) Absolutely fantastic at finding deer. Much more obedient than the younger one so far, but that could be training. She can get aggressive around the deer with other dogs but the worst thing is she gets really excited when she finds it and would literally try and eat the deer (weather dead or alive)
It’s the carcass issue I have.
If I’m in deep cover and she’s found the deer there will be a good few teeth marks in it before I get there.
She’s really steady though. You could literally have a live deer 10 yards in front and will just point it steady as a rock.

I had one that would find the deer, scissor the belly open and devour the guts.
She could open a deer quicker than I could, fortunately, being a rather indelicate bitch, she suffered no I’ll effects from her gluttony.
