Gwp v Gsp

I know this has been done to death. Iv spoke to various people and it’s abit of a debate , Iv a gwp here she hunts well and will find anything that’s about , but been told the short haired are better hunters and got more stamina , I use mine for tracking foxes on the moors and would want the next dog to do the same so any info would be great or anyone uses them to do the same would be great to have a chat

Probably depends on the lines and ancestry - what line of GWP are you comparing with what line of GSP............then you get individual variation, especially in low COI litters
Keith might be on to something here, with lines and individual dogs. For example I’ve got two GWPs from the same kennel and one is a wide ranging dog while the other is a solid close worker. That said, they both hate foxes with a passion.
I think GWPs are better based on absolutely no experience of GSPs what so ever, however I get the impression GWPs are more fur orientated than the GSP. If you are up on the moors, your might want a GWP as they are a bit more heavily built with thicker fur and can deal with the heather and the cold better. I like GWPs sense of humour (usually having a laugh at my expense) and find GSPs either a bit aloof or neurotic.

I’m sure both breeds will do the job but I’d stick with the GWP

That’s what I’m at something that’s wide ranging Iv got a set gps collars I use for my current dogs it’s about getting what’s right for me next and getting it right , bitch Iv her currently isn’t massively wide ranging but if it’s there she’ll find it and speak on it lovely

As stated above, I think it all depends on what line you end up with a GWP even then I think they vary so much from pup to pup. - I am on my 3rd GWP now, this latest one is probably the hardest dog I have ever owned in relation to calming it down as the prey drive is off the scale.( And I have owned quite a few dogs in my life). Luckily she is 100% with cattle / sheep and horses- the breeder I got her from uses this ones dam on the mountains with two bull greyhounds- he promised me a hard hunting , good scenting GWP. He was not wrong. I would never move her on though , I can see light at the end of the tunnel with her as she 3 yrs old now- it is possible some of it would be my doing as she started to early on the deer compared to how long others would leave them to start, but my other dog got injured so pup came along on a jolly and ended up in the deep end to quick.

Ahh,
I’m beginning to suspect you want to to course foxes. And looking at your previous posts I’m pretty certain.

There are loads of GWPs in Wales, if you can’t find a breeder I suspect they have sussed you out and won’t sell to you.

This is a deer stalking forum, and, right or wrong, hare and fox coursing is illegal, may be you should go elsewhere.

Sussed me out? Iv haven’t really contacted any breeders just looking to advice of people that work them , don’t course foxes mate you hunt them , I use two dogs to flush to gun which is perfectly legal

My best advice, plenty of photos, plenty of conversation with the breeder and don't be afraid to travel for the right dog. I picked mine up which added probably another 6 hours of time on the way back from Scotland one day.

Was easily worth the time.
PS, give them an inch, they WILL take the mile. Keep them reigned in

I'm going to get shot down...... but I know a number of GWP owners who have had issues with their wiries aggressiveness towards other dogs/sheep/people

I know a few GSP owners and they have had no such issues

We had GWPs over 25 years ago and they were mild mannered but maybe bloodlines have changed over time

Have had 3 GWP over 15 years . Never had is issues with livestock with any of them.

In relation to other dogs, mine will happily play with other dogs, however if the other dogs show signs off aggression none of them have ever backed down.

In relation to people, I have had issues with certain people they have taken a dislike too irrespective if people I know or strangers. There is one person I deer stalk with who I have to keep the current GWP from as she does not like him at all . The others I stalk with she greets like long lost friends.

I have never had a GSP - but out local pub had one when I was a kid, big dog named Fritz - he was for ever biting customers and bowling dogs over in the car park but that was the late 1970’s 😊 .

Indeed it could well be the individual more than the breed, I think I'm only using a straw pole of about 6 GWP and 4 GSP owners so they could have just been unlucky/lucky

I am on my 5th GWP with the first 2 being from UK and both were aggressive with other dogs. My 3rd, 4th and 5th have been from Germany and Denmark which I imported myself with Liether-Moor, Vom- Schaar and Spanger-Forst being my favourite linage/kennels

COI is important and I would always prefer to use the European/German standards on this as apposed to KC in UK. We need some fresh blood in UK IMO and its nice to see more dogs being imported.

Im happy to import any particular kennels you find better than others?

My last dog was a GWP/GSP mix (although his appearance was pretty much GWP). He was the softest thing you could imagine; just wanted to make friends with everything and everyone but he was also very keen on hunting. Loved being out, did well finding carcasses and was naturally very soft mouthed.

My current dog is a pure GSP and has quite a different temperament. Far more energetic, runs much faster but is also more aggressive towards prey. He's not as gentle when picking up and wants to murder any deer carcass he gets near.

If it ever came down to catching an injured deer, both would have been competent but the GSP would definitely catch up quicker.

Yup ! Indeed . It also seems that lines of GWP that are known for being great soft pets have a lower prey drive

I only have experience with GSPs but have a GWP on the way. They work well on grouse but I have stopped using them for deer, although plenty of people do use them. I found them to get aggressive with people I had with me around a carcass, showing signs of possessiveness.

One of them would whine at times while waiting for a decent shot which was also annoying.

I prefer GSP and my friend prefers GWP. Personally I would say my Gsp's are steadier but on a wounded animal his gwp's seem to do a better job or dragging a deer down and killing. They seem to be a bit more aggressive.

The Two dog breeds are very , very different . The fact they both are tagged " pointer " in the name is about it In my experience ( which i admit is mainly GWP ) of my own and others But the GSP s i have known are pretty much as one expects Pointing dogs for For Falconry or walked up shooting in a small group of guns on the moor etc with what exists there .
