For a start, Muslims buy around 60% of all the sheepmeat produced in the UK, if I remember correctly. Without that market the industry would be knackered. So it's hardly pandering to a minority.
Secondly, for most Muslims, the conventional way in which sheep are killed in the UK is acceptable. The only additional requirement needed to be able to label the product "halal" is the prayer, so it's hardly compromising animal welfare.

ERRRR no well not here its not!!!! as they kill halal lambs/ewes in our local meat plant, they don't even get stunned ! just the throat cut by some 'special' dude. I have stopped them killing my animals and made them stun them before they continued , and i will do it each and every time i bring livestock there if thats taking place that day .In fairness to the man he did come out from the line and told me he respected my wishes regarding my livestock

When I had a small deer farm I was approached to have a stag harvested under this situation. The way it worked was that I got my deer to about 10 yds. They were used to me knocking one down and didn't even jump at the shot. More interested in the food I had put out. I put the shot into the head and the beast dropped. Then one of them went forward and cut its throat while saying something. This was fine for them as the heart was still pumping blood for about 30 seconds and that seemed to satisfy any religious feelings. The only thing I wasn't totally convinced about was that they wanted the animal skinned straight away and the same man had to cut the carcase up while still hot. !!...J

Always seems pretty barbaric to me, especially if the animal isn’t stunned first, il leave that there as I don’t want to offend anyone.

African wild dogs go into the stomach whilst the animal is still alive. Its a question of perspective.

Personally, I am not in favour or Halal style despatch A. because I am aethiest so it means sweet FA to me and B. I would prefer the animal to be as despatched soonest and bleeding out doesnt work for me.

Having said that, being an ex Judo boy and strangles being a tool of the trade, an opponent that knows what they are doing cutting off the blood supply to the brain is like the picture going out on those ol black n white TV sets and was strangely relaxing. Only experienced twice in my career as most want to rearrange your larynx.

For me it goes further. I much prefer a head shot over engine room if possible for the instant lights out effect and thats any creature be it rabbit or red.

Seeing an animal run even after a devastating engine room shot still doesnt sit well with my personal feelings on getting an animal from the mortal side to the spiritual side.

But throat cutting is a nasty business to my way of thinking irrespective of reasons why. In animals we see it as ok but in human society its a horrid death. Like the Japanese considered beheading as potentially honourable, to european, it is punishment. Strange how mindsets work

As a carcase has to be bled, I can see throat cutting is the most logical and potentially easiest method for the right animal... clearly piggy or goat is easier to control head wise than a cape buff but it doesnt sit well for me.
