Harkila vs fjallraven trousers....

In need of some new trousers, the tight wad in me wants another pair of army surplus specials but after all you get what you pay for... basically narrowed it down to harkila or fjallraven. Any personal recommendations welcomed. Also how is the sizing with these brands. I am pretty standard 34 so does that equate to a size 50? Do they come up big or small etc. Thanks in advance!

Can't really compare the two, very different technology and design. For me, harkila or swedteam for hard wearing warm winter 3 season stuff, and fjallraven for lighter summer wear. But you're talking about very different beasts with the two you've mentioned.

Fjallraven 52 is a perfect 36 for me, so you should be on the money with a 50.

But both brands have a huge range of trousers for different applications, so what do you want to use them for and do you have any specific versions in mind?

I know it's a vague answer but I'm really just looking for an all rounder. I don't do any mega cold stalking and I'm not out mid summer after roe bucks, so just something hardwearing suitable for a couple of outings a week in average English weather. Thanks again.

I use fjallraven Vida, in winter thermal long johns on underneath. Not waterproof but dry very quickly. You can wax them, but wash in nick wax waterproof works well. Shrugs off showers and dries even quicker.

Harkila - too expensive for me.

Stick with the surplus trousers.

No matter what I spend on trousers, no pair has lasted more than a season before barbed wire, thorns etc etc trash them. I now just treat them as a consumable. 2 pairs of surplus trousers at the start of each spring.

Happy to spend a lot on a good jacket, but really don't see the point with trousers.

Wouldn't ever buy another piece of harkila clothing again waste of money. Sent 4 pairs back one leeked 3came unstitch they did replace the leaking ones and repaired the other 3 just my 2 pence worth

Im with the army surplus trousers myself, not a fan of spending big money on clothing that gets a real bashing. I have been impressed with the Solognac brand though (French hunting outfitter), got a pair of their inverness trousers which have been very hard wearing and comfy

Falljraven Lappland hydrid trousers all day long best I've ever had, you can wax them if required they have a gaiter bottom built in which works great. 56 is great fitting for my 40 uk waist if this helps
bushcraft store on line have them I've got several pairs and also the Keb trousers as well

cheers Steve

I have 2 pairs of fjallravens for lighter summer wear I had them on at work this year in Mexico in a factory at 40+ degrees every day for 3 months and also went to the USA in 2014 too with them, so far there is no sign of any wear and it is a comfortable thin weave for hot climes.

I have a pair of pro hunters. Good cut, pockets good, usefully straps around the ankle etc But they are not waterproof and are very cold and uncomfortable when they do get wet.
In contrast my deerhunter ram trousers are also not waterproof but remain comfy. They are less hard wearing but a needle and thread sort that.

As mentioned previously, not 100% sure what features you need. A bit like saying I am after a "Ford or a Vauxhall, any thoughts?"
There are so many options, to narrow it down a bit:
Waterproof?
Windproof?
Reinforced?
Terrain
Rough?
Fieldwork?
Forestry?

I am not sure if to be honest Seeland Rover Trousers would not be a good choice or their new Prevail trousers.

Let us know a bit more. The key to the right clothing is plenty of questions and then match the answers to the products.

In that case some Fjallraven Vidda Pros should be a good option. I'm starting to live in mine now and an occasional application of G-wax to the double knees and seat keep them nicely waterproof in those areas, which is handy for crawling and sitting around - it's their brand name for the wax but there are plenty of YouTube vids showing how to make your own from the basic ingedients.

Taunton Leisure have just had some limited colours/sizes on special offer at £89.99 inc P&P, but other offers do crop up from time to time around the webosphere.

Harkila Pro X are excellent trousers but also consider Men's Värmland Eco Shell Trousers. I use both Trousers for hill and woodland stalking in sometimes
pretty miserable conditions and have come to trust both brands.

They are exactly what I have opted for. Happy medium price wise and have had many recommendations for them.

I like a nice baggy fit, warm and waterproof. Deerhunter Ram trews used to do the job , but discontinued. I like to know I can crawl trough/sit in mud and wet, for an hour and not be soaked, cold and miserable, and the Deerhunter Rams did ok.

Any recommends please around the £100 mark ??

Might give these a look.
