Highland Stalker Alternatives

As a general good loking tool i would not choose a kipplauf for daily buisiness . Dont get me wrlng i like mine in 7x57r for buck season start and a stalk every now and then . But when it comes to varmintcontroll during a regular stalk a boltaction is simply the practical choice for me .

If a straightpull for an ok price is of any interest steeleaction might be a nice idea . They have a lighter version out now and you can choose from 4 grades of wood for your stock . Available in 308 in a short system . I have one for driven hunts but the old more heavy one . It is a good rifle thats all i can say

I really like the Steel Action rifles. We now have an importer who supplies them in the UK out of Edinburgh, but he will hand deliver a rifle to the buyer virtually anywhere in the U.K. - what service 😃

Yes i have seen it on yt that steele action went into the uk market . It is,a pitty to hear that you need to travel far to get your hands on one just to get a feeling for one of those . All i can say is that it fitted me very well out of the box i am 194 cm tall and a lefty shooter. The hand cocking system i found very good the only other very good system i know is the one from bixn andy . You dont have this half cocking and missfireing issue like on other brands. All in all plenty of rifle for the price 10 rnd mags are available but for stalking thats of minor importance . Only downside it would not be my first choice for a highland stalk bc the old version i have is pretty heavy . But hey at least a fair excution to have more rifles 🤣

I’ve handled new light ones, could carry one in the hills all day long. The straight pull makes for an amazing culling rifle, as without the bolt upwards torque, you don’t loose sight picture so can be on the next target very quickly
Only reason they’re not in the main U.K. retailers is because no one is willing to buy stock in, the U.K. gun industry is collapsing at an enormous rate, and shops owners, the few that are left, can only take in what is guaranteed to sell. That’s why you see gamekeepers clothing, HIK and tikka and beretta, and main lines of popular ammo and calibres only.

Sad state of affairs, but the economy is collapsing as well, we are heading towards 3rd world status, so there’s just no money going round, no jobs, etc.

Happy Thursday 😃

Hm that sounds like a very dark pic of the future . I hope it doesent happen too soon bc scotland ireland and britain are my prefered countries to hunt in. But i agree the sa is a great culling rifle i use it mainly for driven hunts some times for stalking boar. But for hindstalking in the highlands i prefer lighter gear even though it is not straight pull. I am a big fan of 7x57(r) and 7mm08 or 280 ai for this task .
Happy thursday to you as well

I keep posting this….but my back to basics Parker Hale Pro Stalker in 6mm Remington is my favourite rifle. Not screw cut so no moderator to unbalance it…it balances and handles beautifully, shoots sub moa with the right ammo. Wood is not great but appealing. It’s now topped off with a S&B Klassic 8x56 (as I said its back to basics) although the photos might have been taken with a Delta Titanium I had available when I first bought it. I would look around Guntrader and Auctions for a classic British made rifle.

Great rifle and cool caliber . Congrats on that one .😍

Find a Mauser based rifle with a good action put a nice walnut stock on it, rust black it and if needed a new trigger and steel bottom metal. Lovely classic hunting rifle job done.

Spot on

On that note D, do you have spare
Steel bottom metal for a Mauser? I’m needing to change an shjitty alu one ☝️

I’ve been stalking for a while now, I’m changing back to 308 and need a rifle.

I’m beginning to see rifles as not just a tool for a job. Shotguns have always been functional art to me, however rifles have remained tools until recently.

I’m swaying towards either another tool that I can wack a thermal scope on if required, or more likely a classic stalking rifle.

It will need to be accurate, using factory ammo.

So I can’t afford a highland stalker, what do people recommend? So far a S&L and Sako S90 have made the list.
There’s an M81 Parker Hale in 308 that would make a great alternative to the Highland Stalker

Re travelling far to see specialist rifles. Well if you want a Rigby, you need to travel to deepest darkest South London to visit Rigby and see their rifles. Want a new Daniel Henry - that’s a trip to Dunkeld.

Pretty much any custom rifle you will need to travel.

Or visit them at one of the shows.

There are many fine rifles out there. And many of the older rifles are better than some of the new ones. The old Parker Hale rifles were excellent.

Another blast from the past is the Tikka M-65, LSA-65 series.

I bought this .30-06 Tikka M-65 battue used. It originally came from Sweden. It has a 20 inch barrel and it is so light and handy.

You might think that a 20 inch .30-06 would lose a lot of velocity, but I was surprised to see that it is only about 60 fps slower than most of my other .30-06 rifles.

It has a simple 3-9x40 Burris scope.IMG_20260523_070101012~2.webp
