Highseats..... what do they say about you?

I'm less keen to use a high seat in the evening, but then I'm not overly keen on evening stalking anyway.

Why? The practicalities of searching for and extracting beasts in the gloom? I know a few stalkers around me prefer to stalk am and sit pm so your perspective is interesting.

It's silly, but I just don't like the fact that you're chasing daylight in the evening, whereas in the morning the light is only going to improve.

At the back of my mind is exactly your point about a wounded beast potentially having to be searched for at last light. I've never had it happen, so I'm not going to pretend my dislike of evening stalking is in any way logical.

Or maybe it's the thought of having to get back home and larder something rather than just go to bed :-D

Depends whether I am able to get into the highseat, so they either say to me 'yes' or 'no'; but what they might say about me behind me back I've no idea.

+1
I'm definitely a morning person.
I'll be out for first light easily but by 8 or 9 in the evening I'm looking for my bottle of beer and a cumfy seat.
I also like both stalking and using high seats and this is reflected by the number of beasts grassed split evenly between stalk and seat.

I am the same as you. I much prefer the challenge of stalking around by foot rather than sitting in a high seat. I don't mind the fact that the deer have a better chance of spotting me before I spot them. I can count on one hand how many times in the last 25 years I have sat in a high seat - its too cold and to mind boring.

do you want the challenge of the stalk or do you want to just cull deer? What type of stalker do you want to be as in are you happy to patiently wait out the deer or test your field craft skills in the open wild searching for them.

It's not a dig at anyone, it's a reflective observation about hunting deer I've never thought about!
I want to shoot them as close to the motor as possible .. saves alot of work. :D

I don't do high seats there not for me I'm afraid but I've not got to meet cull targets and all that just stalk for the love of it and on foot is the only way for me I'm afraid, but good luck to those of you if its your thing.......

took a guest out who when we spotted some roe from the vehicle and as I glassed them he unzipped his rifle case and was going to load up and take one off the bonnet at 200m!

He would have been happy to but I made him sneak up the hedge to get a fair bit closer, then he nailed one. He wasn't bothered one bit how he shot the deer, he just wanted to shoot one really. Fair enough...

I don't mind being up a highseat, it's nice to take an afternoon or morning in without any hassle especially if the wildlife play ball. I've only got one that's mine and that was new in the box til this weekend although I bought it in the summer

I find that one of the most enjoyable aspects of recreational shooting/hunting is being able to use different techniques and methods to get a result. I wouldn't want to sit in a highseat every time I go out but sometimes it makes a nice change just to sit back and relax in relative luxury without having to climb over barbed wire fences and crawl through muddy ditches. If you think about it, most of natures top predators are ambush hunters in some form or another, so there's no shame in doing the same.

For me a highseat is just another tool for the job
You set a high seat up in an area where you feel it will be of use to help you shoot a deer or 2
just like stalking , you stalk area's likely to produce deer
You can stalk all day long and see nothing if your deer are only coming out into area's at certain times
part of knowing your ground and the deer that live/feed/move through it is essential for both stalking and highseat placement/work
it's not about what type of stalker you are but more about the type of stalker you are and knowing when to sit and wait or to go find the same deer you would of shot if they had presented when sat in the seat or sat on a ridge or in a bush , even on a deer path
i do think people need to hone their own skills first before questioning others

The ground you stalk must be a major factor in highseat use,i shoot several pieces of land some wooded, some arable and its just not practical to stalk all the time, some evenings time is tight & to be able to get up in a seat for the last hour is a big advantage .Stalking them is the best way ,highseats are the job side of it.A third of the deer i've shot this year were from a seat,i for one think they are a must have tool .
