Home loads

I reload for a few pals as it is a compelling hobby for me and I have all the expensive kit like the Prazi press 120mm. I also use Gordons Reloading Tool software as a backup check to all of my reloading books.
One pal has a drilling in 7x65R which recoiled far too hard for him at 15 Joules as other hunters also commented on so I loaded up 100x for him using all new RWS brass and 10 gram 160 grain cone point bullets with some H4895 powder I had from my days back in the UK so it is at least 24 years old, I did do 5x loads in four different powders for him first and when he did the shooting test he stopped at the first which was the H4895 as it shot so well. He ordered all the components and had them delivered to me then I did the 100x.
Here is the result on Sunday last at 7x57 velocities and 11 Joules recoil. 3 shots with 20 minutes between each shot as it is a drilling that climbs when hot. 18mm group.
So not all loaders are untrustworthy or incompetent.

That’s the beauty of reloading - you can tailor a load to meet your needs. I too have a nice mild load for my 7x65R. I had 12 years of use out of about 50 cases, (thanks Bavarian). I then before all the Pandemic nonsense got hold of 200 RWS HIT cartridges for an absolute song, as nobody wanted such things. I am slowly working my way through them as they work really well. I will work up another load with a similar bullet at some point.

Going forward given the price of lead free ammo I can see reloading becoming more popular. Normal cup and core ammo is £30 plus per box, depending on what you buy. A premium ammo loaded with either a monolithic, a partition, bonded, brenneke type bullet will cost £60 plus. In 2016 I bought a box of 20 RWS ID Classic in Germany at €80.

When reloading bullets now cost £50 to 60 a box. For premium bullets this is for 50, for cup and core 100. So bullets are about twice the price.

Powder - £140 per kg, which is about 300 50grain loads which is about 40p per cartridge. Add 10p primer.

So a non toxic reload is about £1.50 a shot rather than £3, whereas for a simple cup and core its £1 a reload compared to £1.50 a bang.

It is an evening in to make up a batch of ammo. That’s either a good saving on going out, or you cost your time.

I have a .300 Winmag barrel for my Mauser which was until recently shooting 180 grain Barnes RSX at around 2700fps. Quite a soft load for a 300WM. But it was very useful to have a large bullet travelling relatively slowly. That used H4350, which went out when the REACH regs came in. A new load was going to have to be found, but I I used up that load for around 10 years.
I’ve now just followed a very seasoned reloader friends advice and reloaded to what I think is a true Winmag speed of just under 3,000 fps using the same 80 grain Barnes TSX. It’s very accurate and should prove devastating on the deer that I hunt. This is where reloading can really help - you can tune a particular rifle and round combo to suit your needs.
I appreciate you don’t think you’re going to shoot more than 3 or 4 deer a year, so I take on board all that’s been said about costs.. it’s true, and I won’t argue that point. But my God you can increase the accuracy of factory. I cannot find the photo I wanted to show you of the factory Fox grouping in .308 - it was okay, just over 1 MOA so no issues stalking with it, but when I can get the result of the hand loads (first two photos) why not shoot these !IMG_3625.jpegIMG_3623.jpegIMG_1917.jpegIMG_0534.jpeg
