You lot are funny. So we sneak about the countryside killing wild animals and eat them and that's ok, but someone cannot do the same to a sheep?

A .410 shotgun is the perfect tool for the job, but I would use the captive bolt in such a situation. I've shot sheep with a 12G and never had an exit wound.

You can do it yourself or you can use a licensed slaughterman. Also perfectly legal for a FAC holder with a suitably conditioned certificate so long as money does not change hands. As a vet I have slaughtered a few farm animals for people in similar situations.

If you have an abattoir or knackers yard handy then they will often take the spleen and viscera in a sealed bag (the only SRM if less than a year old).

How is it ok to kill deer, but not sheep?

Hi Amanda, there are a few local abattoirs in the area that will dispatch and process the lambs for you it's not expensive and it will be done properly. Get to your local mart and enquire who is local to you.

16 weeks to get a license and nobody questioned that?
How did 'Amanda' know it would be 16 weeks?
This has Troll written all over it

Be fair.
Anyone looking stuff up on-line re: firearms etc is bound to land up on this site in the end. Just because the query was a bit outside the normal remit of SD doesn't mean they were out for trouble. Probably asked the same Q on a few of the farming / smallholding sites as well. It's a pretty common query on those.
If her question has been answered elsewhere then she probably won't be back here anyway. Obviously not shooting folk, just looking for some practical info.

It's worth pointing out to folk posting from all over the UK that the rules and regulations vary depending on which 'devolved administration' or 'Parliament' you come under. Wales has some very specific rules about who can and can't undertake on farm slaughter and what can be done with the resulting carcass. 'Amanda' needs to take proper, authoritative advice and guidance. At my last reading of the rules pertaining to Wales random SGC holders are not allowed to simply rock up and carry out OFS - of course the rules and regulations may have changed since the last time I checked.

I don't even know what 'trolling' is guys just looking for some advice, thanks to those of you who have been helpful

Well ‘Amanda’ for someone who doesn’t know what a Troll is and yet you manage to come up with ‘I don’t know what trolling is’ you have surpassed my expectations.
The title of this website is 'The Stalking Directory’ and generally the posts are about deer stalking and related topics and not about shooting sheep.
If you are into self-sufficiency then I am sure that there are far more appropriate forums on the web that can answer your questions and advise on the legalities.
As for the responders so far, you really have to be careful on what you are stating in your replies as the original enquiry might not be as it seems.
From what I have seen lately we have had the accusation that Brian May had joined under a pseudo name and was fishing for information relating to the Badger culling and only today there has been a post titled F*** me I’m famous’ whereby a member has been named and shamed on Faceache
Maybe I should re-join under the name of Fiona and see what information I can gleam from the armchair / Bar room experts on diverse subjects.
I am not trying to start a fight but let’s have a sense check and keep it real.
 get a tin foil hat fella

Aww brain May was a good one , I miss him :(

I was pointed in the direction of this forum by a good friend who is a gamekeeper who thought I would gain some valuable advice. I must say I'm surprised how hostile you have all been instead of being helpful and sharing your knowledge many of you have just been abusive from behind your keyboards. Its easy to be nasty when your not to face to face, I'll be un-subscribing. Thank you to those who have been helpful and given some good advice. The rest of you need to have a word with yourselves

please do not use a 410 , beside probably been messy ,it not the best for 100% assurance. get a local with a 22 lr or better still been in the business apply for a dispatch pistol, if its a regular occurrence.
Regards & good luck.

There is a lot of holier than thou rubbish on this thread.

I have dispatched many sheep and pigs with a 410 and never had an issue, I have, of late, taken to using the 22RF, purely for discretion's sake. Both have done the job admirably.

As for claiming not to be abusive/unpleasant, in the same breath as accusing someone of trolling, get a grip.

As far as I can see the only mistake the OP made was failing to post an intro, and, for some members at least, she also made the grave error of asking for advice on something she was unsure of. My what a troll.

Amanda, if you are still on here, I am in NCE.

With respect Little Jon, The humane slaughter association (as was - not sure if it still exists under that name) advised against the use of .22 except as a last resort. They recomend a shotgun for all slaughtering by less experienced people. .410 is ideal and not at all messy. It is the tool of choice because stunning and slaughter are carried out in one simple action.

Amanda, if you've looked through the threads in the general section you mayve noticed "F**k me Im famous" which details the antics of anti's on Facebook and the theft of a members photo and details. People are on edge due to this, so please stay subscribed and learn from the members on here.
Im sure you friend, the Keeper has a shotgun and rifle, he may be best placed to provide the service you require.

This has Troll written all over it

When I applied for my SGC the first thing I asked once I was given the all clear was "how long will it take?" to which I was told "There's a delay at the moment so you're looking at 12 weeks". Maybe your FEO likes to keep things from you but thankfully not all of us are in that boat.

This thread has again been subject to some members accusing others of being trolls or troublemakers when there has clearly been little or no evidence.
True the OP had not made an introduction which we/admin/the owners of the site request before posting, and this was rectified after I requested it.

We welcome all serious deer stalkers, managers, part time, fulltime, recreational, countryside lovers, in fact everyone is welcome to become a member of this site providing they follow site rules. Most bring something to the table and we do not, at this point in time get a great deal of trouble, although admin are thankful for members bringing problems to their attention.

However we still seem to get people taking threads way off, including the recent request from a farmer for help in deer management. COULD we please remember that this is an open forum and a little manners goes a long way. No more jumping to conclusions PLEASE, and branding people trolls or troublemakers. I admit it can be difficult to pick real troublemakers up, but that does not mean we brand every new member who asks as unusual question a troll.

Thank you this thread is now closed.
