There's some that say the honours system is either corrupt or politically minded. I don't know about corrupt but many deserving people don't get anything whilst others who are less deserving get gongs. And on the subject of politics, obviously that plays a large role in deciding who does and doesn't get into the House of Lords. Whatever your views, it's pretty clear that the awards are arbitrary. Many think it's a leftover from a different time and some won't have an award given if it has the word Empire in it's name.
Personally? I think that it's a good thing that people are awarded for services above and beyond for society. Not necessarily for just being good at their job though. I'm not sure the awards system should be used to reward people such as good actors for example. So, the system as it is is a jumble and needs a good sort out I think.
