How old does a cartridge have to be to be "accepted"?

Then why not just learn to use the .270 and accept it for what it is? A superb cartridge 🤔

What effort? What fuss? It's an overbore long action that just works
The 6.5-284 does it better with less powder, less recoil, less noise. I think I've used the 270 long enough and often enough to have learned the difference between the 2

Touchy 😅 I think I can class that as a bite 🤣 The real truth is, there really is no 'perfect' cartridge. Everyone has their own preference for their own specific requirements. And nobody is actually wrong.

Apart from Creedmoor fans 🤭

And the 6.5 PRC is essentially the 6.5-284 with a better press officer.

Both of the above do everything a .270 does, just with fewer 20th century rough edges.

But they're both damned ugly cartridges without the sheer charisma of the .270 😉

Ah but then some that had a long life then fade away. Some even once widely used. For the truth is that we now see a world dominated by American products. So in handguns the .455 Webley is moribund and in rifles the .303" but once was used all over those pink coloured lands on the map of the world.

And 7.92mm Mauser aka 8x57 is also effectively gone. The result you say of Germany losing two World Wars? But what of the 9mm Parabellum or was that a different Germany? There's really no rhyme nor reason to what becomes accepted and what finishes as merely as a "do you remember when..." cartridge.

Nor is being "King of the Hill" any guarantee. The .220" Swift, the .300" Weatherby or the .30"/.378" Weatherby and before that .30" calibre "King" the .300" Holland and Holland all were once the zenith but now like the .222" Remington Magnum have been mostly superseded by offerings of lesser velocity.
9*19 is a better cartridge than .455W and 45 colt, 9mm fit most peoples hands better and allow a doubble stack mag. 12-17 rounds in a modern 9mm versus 8 .45s in a 1911, you need less practice time with smaller cartridges, pistol carryers in the military are often less trained in small firearms than a rifle squad.

Whats the point of going from a revolver to an automatic pistol in to WW1 then your sword is the main weapon anyway?

it simply isn't , with the 455 wobbley you could watch the rounds on their way to the target !

Ever shot someone with a 9mm? .45 tends to put them down harder. Half the time 9mm won't even penetrate the sternum if the target is wearing heavy winter clothing.

Don't get me wrong, the 9mm isn't a crap cartridge, or the .45acp a wonder cartridge. Each has their place and practical uses. You just need to know them.

In the immortal words of John Walker, the first man to run 100 sub 4 minute miles - 2nd place is the best of the losers.
6.5 SAUM has already won, the rest is just noise and waffle to occupy the also rans.
