HWV full time deer dog - experiences?

Have seen a fair few out working game and rarer as deer dogs . I find the breed mixed from useless to pretty good , so do you feel lucky?
You sound like a GWP man!? Are you aware of any HWV lines to stay away from?
Yeah stay away from anything but a Labrador LOL I did once own and work a GWP but never again. Seriously though I cannot foresee a time i would choose anything but a lab
I must say - I’ve seen a great deal more useless labs than I have useless HWVs.
Pretty Obvious because 99% of Labs are in pet ownership literally we are talking many millions of them in the UK . However the lab is also the most popular working gun dog , Guide dog and might well be the most used deer tracking dog in the Uk. As a working gundog ? the planet by a long way for a reason i guess? . I have seen 3 good HWV . Statistics no-matter how they are presented don't twist real facts !

I’m honestly a big fan of labs, mine is a beast on the foreshore. I’m doing some research on the HWV and keeping an open mind
My first ever Lab was my wildfowling dog ( a very good one ) I never trained him on deer at all , just lost a big sika stag in an area full of tall rushes and bog. Previous i had GWP for that work but he was PTS over serious human aggression issues . After that its all been about Labs for ever "born half trained" but that doesn't mean we don't put the rest in !

Had labs and GWPs, not had a HWP. In my opinion, if you get one from the right litter, any breed will do. I'd avoid racy field trial labs, but look for a good athletic well boned lab. GWPs I'd look for the most laid back one in the litter. HWVs I'd look for good tight coat, and deer working in the parents.
At the end of the day, with any of these breeds it's down to the character of the dog and how you bring the best out of it.

Well There is a cavernous defences in many breeds of dogs . My Labs have always come via John and Nina Halsted Both sires are multi Field trail winners but also record setting numbers numbers of wins at the Championships in their time . None could have been called lacking in bone in any way or anything away from double thick coats. Shure some dogs are lacking in their physical make up but you simply wont find that within the better breeders . I see quite a few drastically different HWP differences in height and weight etc also , again its not the Breed that creates that its the breeder ! As they the breeder decide what is worth using in breeding and what is not , little to do with the breed overall . Pet trade and home breeders doing it not to provide better dogs but for cash it is a PITA for this stuff .
if you look at the top kennels FOR THE BEST BREEDERS , of working dogs its staggering too look at the hip scores etc on our working dogs . What the new owner has to do is feed them well , train them well and work them well for your needs ( dogs don't learn on the rug near the fire or stuck in a kennel ) so you only get out what you put in right ?!

As for HWVs would not have anything else after having owned, trained and worked three of them.

I have a trained deer dog, and I know of others who use them. Korthals Griffon Fantastic nose and ears, coat is very dense so they stay warm even on the coldest days and always eager to work, loads of energy good hard working dogs with a very placid nature. I have a KG all rounder HPR work as well as deer work and one I use only on deer. Have a GWP as well for HPR, can’t get that steady on deer and it always thinks birds rather than deer, horses for courses I suppose. KG seems to be easier to work with and train than a GWP. Fully recommend the Korthals Griffon if you can find one! I may be able to help there….
Thanks for the input carthorse. Always liked the KG but not seen many in action. The last one I saw was in a trial and she was a little belter. She went out on her second run after running in. Shame because otherwise she was brilliant. She got the guns award.
