I Feel like a dinosaur

Talking to someone over the weekend who told me he had just passed his dsc level 2 . He then told me he had allso been on the police rta for deer accident call outs a while back (good I say). He then tells me he's going to do the advanced deer managers course . (Keep it up I say!.) He's only had an Fac for just over 3 years and has only done paid stalks. God he's got more paperwork in 3 years than I have in 30+years . I must be a dinosaur.

Its a funny little world. I decided to get my fac and motorcycle license at the same time. 4 years later I am still not driving a motorcycle as there's always an issue they figure out to prevent my from passing the test.

Sometimes certain things are a lot easier to achieve and I am glad that I dont have to chase deer on a motorcycle.

There’s an expression-“you’re only as good as the last time you did it”. It holds me to account. The “paperwork” process often means you’ve got to prove competent in company, even if it’s only shooting to the common standard of 3 rds into a 4” circle at 100 or even 150 metres. Worth doing for yourself because you’ll recognise the “walkers” as opposed to the “talkers”

Shooting over 300 metres a case in point...

Avoid the bikes lol, it's not you that's usually the problem, it's everyone else who's on the road trying to kill you lol

Fair play to the fella. Whatever floats your boat I suppose, and perhaps he has particular reasons to require these qualifications? Best of luck to him. Personally I've only ever bothered to do the DSC level 1. I needed it to sell carcass at the time, I've never needed to further this but that's just me. I've shot a fair few deer since my level 1, and I'm still learning all the time if I'm honest. Not sure what advanced deer management is? sounds like it's for managing park herds maybe? Qualifications are never a substitute for experience imo in any line of work. Pass both the men a knife and a deer each to Gralloch and lader, you'd soon tell who the chap with years of experience, and no qualifications but with a few hundred deer under his belt was from the fella with all the qualifications and limited experience.

It's safer just to take a follow-up shot. ;)
And miss the HD video taken from a drone of me chasing a deer at crazy speeds with one hand on the handlebar and the other holding a rifle. Ohh wait, thats in the new Bond film coming out :worried: Too many bond movies aren't as good for me as I thought.

Maybe not from a drone, but hacking about the bush on an MX bike after feral pigs looks a whole heap of fun!

Made me think of John Wayne galloping across the meadow, shooting with both hands reins in teeth reloading using a pistol twirl on the rifle.
Rooster cogburn, one of his best characters, and Jeff bridges did a decent job of it in the remake also.
"Fill your hands with lead, you son of a bitch!"

Just passed his level 2 so must have shot 3 deer. Not sure if that includes RTA ones. Can they be included in level 2?
I’m aware he must’ve shot 3 for level 2 I can’t help but wonder if further time , money and effort would be better spent in the field getting real experience

Plenty of reason to get the tickets however I do understand what your saying with regards to lessons learnt in the field.

Perhaps he’s learns better in the classroom and then will use this knowledge in the field?

Who knows.

Go easy on yourself. They'll be plenty of time for paperwork and badges when we're on the Boris 3-Day Week!
