Never shoot a red stag In a piece of ground surrounded by bog! Unless you want too be covered in blood carrying out the haunches on your shoulder and dragging the ribcage up a hill.

Shot at about 7:30 and It was 12 time I went home... busy week next week considering there's a hind and a stag In the larder and we had a roe in there earlier this week.

Any deer stalker that says they haven’t shot deer In stupid places more than once is liar or they haven’t shot a lot of deer!

I once shot three big lowland stags on a water meadow, in the winter, got the buggers on the trailer and literally had to rev the quad flat out to paddle my way off the field with the quad down to axles and trailer down to his axles, to then drive up the headland and run out of fuel

And then bugger me if three weeks later I did exactly the same thing, but this time it was 6 hinds, same bloody field too

Too be fair It was wet but If there on the 2nd or 3rd (bottom) green bits no problem Its 350y 160y 100y between all those green bits kind of deceptive piece of land In terms of distance, If it wasn't for these two fighting there pretty predicable In coming up too at least 160yrds each evening.

Farmers quad road goes down about 200 yards so even If we cant get up next too them directly we can get close enough too attach a rope and either winch it, or drag it.

They did that night but it must of been just turning 5 It was dark dark, wanted too shoot one but I knew It was an awful idea with no daylight In a wet field and so dark I could hardly ID what I was shooting.

I was so tempted by a Mohawk years ago in 308 but declined.

They did mate, why did you decline the 308? ? - a stutzen 600 rem mohawk (allegedly it was anschutz who fitted and assembled those for remington, as an attempt to make them more pleasing for the european market) is the best shouldering rifle, i have ever tried! As @Sol says, there is something about that combo of weight and length that works so well in that design, albeit the one i tried had its scope off, which i guess might change things. The rifle has a 18.5 inch barrel i think and weighs only 2.4 kilo sans scope and ammo. That is kipplauf territory!
For a hunter working the dogs on a drive, or going in for wounded game, i can almost only think of lever actions of equal length and handyness.

But weidmannsheil to @Sol ! a fine stag, did you check the teeth to see how old he was ?
