Importing A Rifle From Germany

How best to go about importing a second-hand rifle into the UK from a German RFD? I'm led to believe that post BREXIT (sorry!) this is now an utter pain and with indeterminate fees beyond its going to be something nearer £1K than £500.00, even if a RFD this side of the Channel is willing to get involved.

This is all very frustrating having seen a rifle that ticks my boxes so confirmation from The Stalking Directory that I should indeed forget it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

K
Ps: Can't believe it is as simple as hopping on a plane to Germany with my FAC and an empty PELI case.

Would have been much simpler before Brexit 👍( Just saying)

I tried to bring back an unfired NIB BRNO ZH in 8x57 & 12G that was on my German papers for an SD chap who wanted it. My Kent FEO would not let me bring it in on a visitors cert, I do have a UK SGC no FAC anymore.

I don’t see any reason why you can’t just hop on a plane and go and pick it up.

I don’t know if Germany had a tax free shopping scheme, but if so you could use that to avoid German VAT, which presumably is applicable if the rifle is new, and then you could pay UK VAT when/if asked when you declare the rifle at UK customs.

Even easier would be to drive. I picked up a shotgun in France once and took it back through the channel tunnel - just showed the serial number to someone and customs. They were only interested in seeing that the number matched something written on paper, which was my SGC.

I'm not looking for competition in the purchase of such so will let you know when a;- I secure it or b;- (more likely) it has sold to a German or US collector!

🤣🤣🤣 I thought you might say that.

Fair enough too.

I reckon drive out there and buy it…

The German authority BAFA is not issuing export permits to third countries ie. the UK. Prepare for a long wait or just forget it. Since Brexit the procedure is a nightmare. Fingers crossed for the future.

Indeed if you are within the EU it’s a doddle. If you’re in the UK, it’s very difficult - and expensive. At the moment easier to import from the USA - though again expensive.

Exporting from Germany through another EU country violates end user regulations and could land you/parties involved in hot water. If a NI gunshop bought the rifle in Germany and you then bought it from them, it might work. Presuming you can find someone to agree to all this - and it will be expensive.

Tempted to ask Nigel Farage to pick it up on his way back from his fund raising meeting with Elon. Hell, he's got a lot to answer for!

Ideology and practice, the two don’t always align. And if they do, it takes time and effort. Not much chance of anyone putting effort into making the transfer of firearms across borders easier. Then again, this should not be the problem it is now, if the Germans could only get their house in order. Saying that, even in an ideal post-Brexit scenario, the transfer of anything firearms related to the UK is difficult and expensive.
