In ear active ear defender

I'm looking for recommendations based on. Real experience for a pair of in ear electronic ear defenders. I'd rather not go moulded as I find them uncomfortable after a time. I would like to be able to adjust ambient noise volume if possible. My wife wants to buy them for my birthday (June) so I have a little time and no budgetary concerns...haha.

I'll be shooting 280 with a brake if it matters

Any help appreciated. Google only goes sofar

Stalking or range? Round count and in time frame? Pepperpot or real brake that directs the blast towards shooter? Barrel length i.e. approximate muzzle pressure?

If you find moulded plugs uncomfortable, I'd be very vary of any kind of lesser plugs and muzzle brake... did you push them properly in your ears, allowing the to expand etc. For anything but shot or two I'd say no.

(personally testing Peltor EEP-100 to use for driven hunt and unmoderated rifle, so far so good, seem to get better situational awareness than with electronic muffs that are no-no for me, but one of the plugs seem to have failing battery that I'm trying to debug before sending in for warranty)

Stalking; I have Swatcom that I’m happy to use at the range. I just don’t like cans on when I’m stalking. It is a tuned pepper pot brake. 23” barrel. I’ve got a set of moulded headphones from Mercury that I bought for sleeping. They weren’t comfortable lying on, but I’m going to try wearing them all day and see. I appreciate that the best attenuation will be with custom moulded.

I have some custom made SWATCOM in ear actives, but do not like them. The volume cannot be adjusted and they pick up wind noise like crazy. The background noise gets really annoying after a while so I switched back to cans.

I've got these, wife has the green ones which are the same aside from the accessories as far as I can tell(?) although the orange are sold as being for forestry...

They're very good, pros are that they come with several interchangeable tips so you can find a comfort/sound level that suits you. You can also buy different ones. They have three volume levels, all of which automatically cancel out loud noises above the threshold. Level one is a sort of muffled ambient, similar to normal plugs/cans but clearer. Level two is normal, you can hear everything that's going on around you and hold conversation, etc. Level three is like superhero hearing, it gives a slight amplification to all the normal sounds, which I find brilliant when I wear them rough shooting. They re-charge in the little case, and the battery lasts ages and you can genuinely put them in and forget about them. Wifey wears hers for various club shooting disciplines and says the same.

At the Stalking Show I noticed one of the custom plug makers was selling a custom mould with these same electronics in, so we've both got a set of moulds on order to go with our existing electronic parts.

I would suggest, that if your hang up on custom mouldeds is based on wearing a pair for sleeping, you should definitely do as you say and try them on all day first.

I do not think there is much out there that is comfortable actually lying on - will change the shape of your ear and apply pressure to your ear as well. I used to sleep with in ear headphones for my tinnitus, but have now moved to something more like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/WU-MINGLU-Bluetooth-Headphones-Headbands-Adjustable/dp/B07PMRG7HG/

Even that is not remotely as comfy lying without, but I don't want the missus to moan about me having to have my "rubbish" music on to sleep - already get enough flak for the snoring 😂

Yes, I ended up with Komoot, which are designed for sleeping

I think that must be Mercury. If I go custom it will be theirs with the Pelton in. They already have my impression

Peltor EEP100 user here too, amplification is good, noise reduction is very comfortable the onky downside to me is that when stalking with them it amplifies your heartbeat sound to you, your footsteps which in turn makes you want to not move! 😄

I had impressions made by mercury at the British shooting show as I'd made the decision for electrics, ment to be here first week in April but they haven't arrived yet, apparently they're waiting for parts to make them 🤷🏻 looking forward to trying them tho

I rate these, but with a mic you will never get rid of the wind noise on certain days.

That's the same with over ear. If it's that windy you can turn the mic off

Thanks for sharing this! Ordered one for the other half!

Another vote for Peltor EEP 100’s 👌🏻

I believe the difference between the green and orange are the orange case has a batter in it so you can charge them without the usb.

Also bear in mind that if custom ear moulds don’t expand in your ear they will offer slight less protection.

I use Mino CENS Foam Tips - 12mm Short - Black - CENS digital with mine and find them very comfortable

I use both the peltor 100 and the Caliber defenders.
Comments above are as found but will add, the Peltor do not last as long without re charging compared to the Caliber.
Peltor are lighter and seem more comfortable.
They also have x3 volume settings that are easy to understand.
The Caliber are larger, charge lasts longer but I find volume settings are more difficult to understand.
Tap to change but no clear understanding where in the volume range you are.
I also find them louder and pick up the wind noise more, they also pick up sounds better which is good for us deaf chaps.
The blue tooth can be handy when sitting for long periods in a high seat.
They also charge while in the box for x3 charges.
Best to try each as they are different beasts.
You could look at the Peltor 200 as they have charging facility.

There is a version with a power bank in the case, but it's not the Organge one that I have. Edit: Crossed posts with @GIMLET61 above, it's the 200 that has a power bank in the case. The only difference I can tell between the orange "forestry" model and the green, is that the orange came with an extra type of ear tip. This ear tip is quieter/more suppresive than all the others and it's the one I chose to use (although, it is chunkier and couldn't fit my wife's ears...)
It may be that that's the only thing that makes it suitable for "forestry or shooting" as the blurb says. Maybe a certification thing that it has to achieve a certain level of reduction that the tips in the green kit don't? 🤷‍♂️

I chose the Soundscope ear protection system a few years ago. British made I believe. They are made to fit my ears, and protect my ears better than a suppressor would do. It also dampens the sound of my shotguns and my friends guns. In addition to that they will also function as a hearing aid, as the input can be adjusted to the level I want. A nice thing for guys who started shooting at a time when one wasn't worried about hearing loss and didn't do a thing to protect the hearing. It also connects via bluetooth to my hunting radio, so there is no need for anything connected to my ears when I use the radio. Thereby the radio will not make any noice in the woods. I have never looked back after I got them, and I cant really do without them now.
