In the Market for a New Scope

So I'm currently running a Burris Four X 3-12*56 on my Tikka .308Win. I never was mad on the scope but it came with package deal so ended up with it. In fairness, it has clear glass, and good up to last light. However the magnification ring and turrets are stupidly stiff to turn.

I was watching a video on a Vortex scope on youtube, the guy mentioned audible clicks and how nice the vortex was. Naturally, I got my set up and had a go to see how nice mine were. Ended up having a bit of a fiasco then where the elevation turret was stuck. I could turn it down but not up. I knew I hadn't run out of elevation and eventually with some teasing, it started to turn both ways up and down of zero. I've returned it to zero on the turret and if the scope is worth the money I payed for it, it should have tracked back to zero just fine. Test shoot to follow this evening.

That being said, I've had enough now and want to change scope -

Been looking mainly SFP stuff but wondering if anybody has any opinions on the following:

  • Element Helix 6-24*50 SFP (Cheap and cheerful set up - I've heard of guys being very happy with them)
  • Vortex Viper Gen 2 5-25*50 SFP
  • Zeiss Conquest V4 6-24*50 SFP (no paralax adjustment AFAIK)
Regards,

HnB

I have a zeiss 6-24x50 side parallax red dot 60 illuminated reticle for sale. Great scope. Selling to fund NV

Looks like a tidy little scope alright. I'm not sure on the reticle 60 as I'm trying to source something with graduation lines on the reticle. the Burris I have is the classic german reticle. I'm also in Ireland so not sure how shipping scope would work.

Unfortunately it all comes down to what you want to spend.

Out of the 3 on your list (to my eyes) the Zeiss is the best by a big margin and I’ve used all 3

I recently was in the market for a new scope and had my heart set on a Meopta ZD 4-16 which I purchased.
When I went to buy the scope I thought I would try a few other brands just to make sure I was making the right choice. I compared it to the following:

Vortex PST gen2 4-16 SFP
Meopta Opika6 3-18 SFP
arken sh-4 gen 2 4-16x50

All were looked through at a building at 200 yards and 900 yards.

Vortex – Very impressed but really didn’t like the ret. The turrets were very good and all controls were great. FOV was also very impressive along with the resolution and colour. Was seriously considering this until I had it side by side to the Meopta ZD. The meopta has no purple fringing where the Vortex did and the Meopta was just easier to get behind with the glass being better across the board. Not really apple to apples as the ZD is way more expensive. (vortex turrets were better and have a way better warranty)

Meopta Optika6 – didn’t like it to be honest, glass was crisp but on higher mag it got very fussy to my eyes anyway. The FOV was also noticeably narrower than the Votex. Controls were decent enough. At 900 yards there was a lot of purple fringing.

Arken – wow this impressed me. Best turrets that I have ever tried. All controls were amazing and the glass was very very good. Its just a rip off that its literally half the price in the states. Was tempted by this one but it was a no go as the weight was heavy and it’s a 34mm tube. I tried the higher end arken ep5 5-25x56 but this wasn’t half as impressive, anything over x18 and you had to be perfectly behind it or the image went all milk quickly.

I tried a Zeiss v4 in the shop but the turrets were so mushy I wasn’t interested in it. I have owned a V6 5-30 in the past and that was a huge step up but comes at a cost.

The Meopta ZD is a very old design but the glass is so sharp. Looking through it is like looking through the higher end schmidt and bender scopes, the picture always looks perfect and natural at what ever range.

Another option would be a Delta titanium 2.5-15x56. I sold mine to buy the Meopta because I wanted a better ret and turrets. The delta has very good glass but is a little more fussy to get crisp at longer ranges.

Just my opinion as everyone's eyes are different. I would defiantly go and look through some scopes and outside not in a brightly lit shop.

Jamesy I cant thank you enough for that write up. I'll check out all of what you mentioned.

The Burris has very spongey turrets. Need to be dead silent to hear it click when dialing it. No bueno IMO. Funds are tight at the moment so will be next payday before I will pull the trigger so to speak.

Your more than welcome.

I'm not oppose to FFP - I've just heard they are not great on low mag at last light. How do you fair with it?
Cant say I've ever had any complaints using a FFP scope during low light situations.

Both my Schmidt and Bender scopes were FFP and I could see plenty fine through them.

Same again with the Meopta now.

I've also had SFP scopes (currently have another Meopta SFP on another rifle) and I certainty haven't noticed a difference. I would like to think its more down to the glass.

Delta Titanium scopes in my opinion are very good / reliable and reasonable priced scopes with good glass and punch well above their weight , well worth considering

Depending on price budget I’d go for the following
Delta titanium hd
Ior crusader
Nightforce Atacr
S&b pm2
Sightron s8

Based on the price range of the scopes the op is asking about, I think apart from the Delta, the other suggestion will be way over budget and very heavy compared to what is currently being used. Awesome line up of scope though, would love a look through the new S8.
