I have picked up a tin box with the crows foot on dated 1943, any one able to identify its original purpose or have any info on W.i.f & sons?

A bit of probing about on the Interweb and W. T. French and Son popped up who made lots of Aluminium ware, doesn't explain what the box was for , but it's a start.

The broad arrow /I\ indicates government property. It is most often associated with military items but not exclusively. I'd suggest it may be something like a dial sight for use or some weapon or other, be it a machine gun on a tripod be it a Vickers or a Bren or an artillery piece or a mortar in the indirect fire role. Thus the "L" shape of the most of it. And the smaller compartment maybe for a lens associated with that sighting onto a post driven in the ground being used as a reference point? But then again why would it be painted a grey silver which was at one time the standard inside colour paint used on armoured fighting vehicles such as tanks. So it could be as mundane as a box for a flare pistol and its cartridges?
