Ingenious, but illegal

Not much difference from the various Highland estates that released European red stags and wapiti to try to increase trophy sizes. Just a technologically advanced way of doing it.

People have been trying variations of this ever since trophy hunting became a thing.

Indeed wasn’t it the Romans who brought fallow deer with them to the UK? And the Norman kings loved their hunting and established Royal Hunting Forests - Epping, Windsor, New Forest, Cannock Chase etc. Arthur’s Seat was the hunting chase for the Scottish Kings, Falkland Palace another.

That’s slightly different in that they brought in a completely different species to hunt, rather than introduced a larger relative of an existing species in an attempt to introduce genes for bigger trophies.

They knew about breeding animals and slaves. Latin, Greek and other old literature is full of praise of animals being hunted. Romans captured plenty of wild animals for Hunting and gladiatorial pursuits so they could well have chosen fine specimens and relocated them elsewhere for breeding purposes and released for hunting.
