Integrally Suppressed .308 Rifles

Form over Function
no more efficient that a well designed muzzle can or over barrel mod.
Also rots the exterior of the barrel if not stripped and cleaned every time, the constant stripping of mods is an issue in itself leaving seals compromised, threads worn and leading to gas leaks, hots spots, burns and potential breaches of outer shell
few examples on here of such......

The huge chamber is of value to cooling down the charge of larger cartridges but is wasted on 40+ gr of powder in a .308

far better matching the bore to calibre on a well designed over barrel
And looking at the Steyr breeze rifles, they are significantly more expensive (c£2k) than the standard barrelled rifle.
I also wonder about the longevity of such a design as well as the corrosion impact on the barrel itself (I’m guessing that the moderator ‘sleeve’ is not removable?)

Sorry should have made it clear, it is aesthetics more than anything for me, I don't like the look of a silence on the end of the barrel, All my shooting is sub 200y so any degradation in performance would be negligible to me shooting such short distances.
Lord be praised! A fellow sufferer.

Or a .45/70 shooting a 500gr projectile for 1200ft/lbs energy. Probably a 425gr projectile to make 1000ft/lbs but I haven’t got that in my software to check.

Would be pretty neat in a 12” barrel rifle. Like you say with one of the digital scopes with built in range finder.
Word of caution, it will be loud. With moderator.

When trying to get as silent rifle as possible, number one is long barrel (or other arrangement where gas seal is maintained and muzzle pressure lowered). And second one a very good moderator, designed for subsonic use. They hardly exist on the market, you might be able to get 45 pistol moderator (might need slightly opening up). And of course 45cal will be louder than, say 30cal. There's 50% more circumference, for the gas to escape in moderator.

But you won’t get deer legal with a .308 at subsonic velocities. .308 would be a waste of time as a 300 black out would do the same thing.
You mean everybody that has moderator on their 308 is shooting subsonic?

BTW 308 isn't waste of time, at least much time. It's trickier than smaller 30cal cartridges (if subsonic) but has upsides as well. Especially in the era of digital sights, where it's easy to have multiple zeros (and keep track on which is in use).

My point was it is a waste of time for deer as it will not be legal for them, and a 300 blackout will be more simple to run subsonic.

Take your point on the moderator though and if not subsonic then a short, say 12" .308 should still just about make the minimum, lots of unburned powder though!
