Interesting open letter concerning the lead shot/ammunition ban

Except 3030, so far.

If anyone wishes to donate a turn bolt in say 308 give me a shout because exemption or not my levergun will be running on what works in its action and velocity levels.
Surely a chance to buy another gun shouldn’t be missed lol. I know you’ve not had any luck but I respect you for trying.

I am beginning to think there is an inverse correlation between those who are strongly against non lead ammunition and those who have actually tried non lead ammunition?! With the exception of @Smellydog who gives it a go, and has struggled a little mostly the strongest views are held by the least experienced. I wonder what that tells us? Or perhaps I’m wrong I don’t know
How can you try what exists in the utopian world of aspirational stocklists or has yet to go into production. In short cf rifle ammunition I can get components to make up non lead rounds, no problem there, already using it. Rimfire non lead exists but not readily available. Don't know if the Prometheus steel airgun pellets are still available, I have a few left over from the 1970s. The huge stumbling block is 20 bore shotgun ammunition, I just hope that the Hortonium shot or something similar turns up soon, for a whole plethora of reasons steel shot is not for me and not worthy of further discussion.

Thanks but I don't want to buy another deer rifle. I only stalk a few local fallow.
Also I don't want to buy another rifle to circumnavigate woke bitches down at HSE, Westminster and the voice of shooting numpties.
I have the same thoughts in respect of my shotgun shooting, but if a near equivalent to or better than lead alternative turns up I'm happy to try it.

I think airgun and rimfire ammunition will be allowed as lead in the new legislation. I agree 20bore will be interesting this is my go to shotgun. One or two steel options are becoming available and I think it’s solvable. But we shall see right

Even if it costs 4x?
Pretty much resigned myself to that one for game shooting, its hideously expensive anyway and proportionately doesn't add much to the cost of the day at £ 850 ish, I don't go very often. The problem is clay shooting that I do as a social activity. At the moment it costs £20 plus around the same in cartridges, around 2 times a month, this will become problematic.

Like I said, steel isn't for me.

Incidentally, for guidance on what will and won't be allowed look in the LAG meeting minutes for January 2025. BASC will no doubt gob off about achieving this that and the other concession on what already appears to be a done deal. As for the government's 3 years phase out that appears to be a political stunt so that they can claim to have listened to the shooting community when it reinstates the 5 years that HSE originally recommended.

I heard it fourth hand three years ago what the outcome was going to be via a friend of friend of a lord etc etc.
The only thing wrong (so far) is that 243 was also going to be exempt! But anything below it will be exempt.
That was three years ago!

I left that part of pheasant shooting years ago.
Very rarely I may get asked to join a few for a knock about.
I'm lucky in that I have a few places I can help myself to a few birds and I take delight in doing so, especially after controlling predation a little bit and seeing wild stock.
One land owner comments every season that he is delighted to see so many wild young birds and apportions it squarely at my efforts.
However, I'm quite prepared to chop up my passion that is muzzleloaders. Nothing beats taking a nice bird or two with one.
Same with my other shotguns and switch to rifle only.
Some will be disgusted at the thought but I honestly couldn't give the proverbial.

I'm 58, been there and done it, not everything but most. Helped out on two big shoots, helped out on three smaller shoots.
Slept with the pheasants, poacher watched all night, up the mountains of Scotland and in the forests everywhere and the best was selling a thousand rabbits a year for ten years so a fallow here, a fallow there, a pheasant for the pot, a rabbit or hare the same, I'm good. And rifle will do it.

Peregrine don't appear to list a .308" for 3030 leverguns with tubular magazines.

Any others?
Page 10, between 30-06 and 300 BLK. Last time I looked the 30-30 uses a .308 bullet. The Bushmaster or VRG3 is a flat nosed non toxic bullet that they have in 135 and 150gn .308 diameter.

More details about the VRG3 bullets from the Peregrine Website

“Also known as VRG3, this bullet is purposefully designed for hunting dangerous game in dense thicket or bush conditions. It is renowned for exceptional knockdown power, deep penetration, and the ability to withstand the toughest bones while ensuring perfect expansion on both bone and soft tissue, even at impact velocities as low as 1500fps. The frontal design ensures a straight wound channel for clear entry and exit points, facilitating effective blood trails. Proven in Africa against the toughest game!”

Most 30-30s are a 1 in 12” twist. Min twist rate of the 135gn .308 according to technical specs is 1 in 14”.

@Edinburgh Rifles had a number of the Bushmaster bullets in stock when I picked up some peregrine bullets a couple of days ago.

I'm with you there!
One good, trusted rifle to cover all bases.
Plenty of good sport to be had, even if a little unconventional, and food on the plate.

(btw, I initially read that as "slept with the peasants", and was about to reply that I'd done that too, and found it very invigorating!)
