Hi all
So someone's had a little 'accident' involving a toy poodle and a dachshund...I'm lead to believe 'doxiepoo' is the result 🤦🤷🏻
We've always had terriers mainly Jack russels and we love the character/mischief/intelligence and general keenness for everything. But after loosing our last one recently we thought about a change, it needs to be 90% pet and good with kids (old enough to understand dogs now but like to play and cuddle still) but I wanted something that could potentially do a bit of deer tracking if tought and a bit of beating on shoot days (walk one shoot one syndicate type of thing and not many days a season). We were thinking either cocker or teckel but prob teckel and we don't want anything as big as a lab, and although not big I've seen a teckel do a full days beating and not flop at the end of the day like some other breeds can
What's your thoughts and ideas please, any advise welcome and thanks in advance
Cheers
J

Ive only ever encountered dachshunds not teckels. Dachsunds are horrible neurotic snappy and noisy.
My brother has one and it has bitten one of his sons.
I wouldnt let one visit let alone own it.
Toy poddles are weird.
I think it will end up being the worst of both and not alot of use

We’ve had 3 poodle crosses. They’ve all been unnecessarily excitable and noisy. As a pet, I’m sure it’ll be fine but, for what you want, I’d probably hold out for a Teckel.

Whenever people talk about crossbreeds they always talk about the best characteristics of both breeds rather than the downsides of both. It would take a few generations of selective crossbreeds, discarding any that weren't exactly what you wanted and only breeding the best to get a reliable crossbreed with the best characteristics.

All poodle crosses I know are noisy and absolutely mental as far as energy levels go. I get the logic behind them as a non shedding dog for people with allergies but again, careful breeding is a must. The Australian guy who bred the labradoodle for blind people who had severe allergies has said he wishes he never did it after seeing what the breed has become.

Not going to lie, we're only considering it because they're from people we know, and cheap so we're trying to find our what we can first. People we've spoken to with cockerpoo's/labradoodle never mentioned noisey or excitable. How high energy and excitable are we talking compared to lively jack Russells, I have no poodle experience at all?
On a slightly different note, I've always wondered, would most dogs with any form of usefulness to their breed not follow a scent with a bit of training?

If you spent £1000 on a dog and it lasted 10 years thats less than £2 a week on the out lay.
Considering running cost and vet bills, i would buy a breed a knew was going to work.
A cocker would do what you want, soft as butter and you could hunt the country.
Spend your money once wisely

Its a mongrel, or as they used to be called street accident. Poodle and Sausage dog = SausagePoo.
Assuming its not a Standard Poodle ;) Toy;s are yappy things so you could end up with noisy long curly Sausage

Go pure Teckel but be prepared for a struggle!

Cute, endearing, loveable but at times, you'll curse, cry and wonder why on earth you chose the breed! However, after 8 Hungarian Vizslas, I'm wondering why it took me so long to chance upon this breed and to add such a dimension to family life that our Wiggy will never ever be forgotten or not remembered without a smile. Amusing, interested, enquiring, loveable and, when you can stop the prey drive at 15m or so, an absolute star to have with you in the field. Never flagging, ever questing, happy in his work but once home, curled up on SWITBO's bosom or shoulder, contented with his lot. Small, but with a strength of character and a big heart that instantly endears you to him but fierce enough to confront any fox, boar or intruder.

Yes, I'm smitten but remember, they can live for 16 years so do make the right choice.

Search "Teckel" and my username - you'll find a lot more.

Thanks for all that folks it's appreciated, just thought it worth checking first.
So how do teckels compare to jack Russells for trainability and strong mindedness etc, a lot of the things I hear about them sounds like standard terrier traits and I've always wondered if people are comparing them to tamer breeds or if they are just genuine little s***s compared to everything else? 🤣
Cheers

I disagree, we're on third Standard Wire hair Dachshund, each one brought up the same way as my Lab's. No snapping or endless barking.
As any dog , any breed, it's how you raise them.

If there is any of this in it,
You are in for a roller coaster ride, one of mine .........View attachment 399271
😂 In what sort of way, 2 down sides to them I've heard more than once is excessive yapping thats unstoppable (but I do agree with Cranhills comment) and poor recall? I'm not that bothered about when tracking as hopefully won't be needed all that much and I can keep it on a line(?) but at home and general walks and out and about, we don't want a dog that has to be on a lead all the time.
And...dog or bitch?
Cheers

Wouldn't swap them for anything else ;)
Luck of the draw with any dog breed, ........ Otto below, the more thoughtful one, thinks he can fly, tries his hand on the bird population (sometimes wins)
Franz, pictured above should be wearing a premier league football team shirt, (Dribbles a ball better than me), but both mustard at moving earth to get at the prize.
They are litter brothers, get on like a house on fire, & are happy alongside the two other pack members. Arthur a Greyhound & a Collie Lurcher cross, Katy ... mad as a box of frogs.

Mine's not yappy except when giving "voice" in pursuit. We have turned a corner recall-wise and I can stop him within 15m "if he goes off on one" but in terms of sheer attitude, resourcefulness and determination, I've seen no other. Then at a flick of a switch he's the cutest thing in my family's life and my wife's favourite. I've been with dogs all my life and had my own for the last 40 years. My Teckel is a definite "keeper" despite being a little sh*t on occasion. I think they call it character

Haha excellent stuff we like character. Might sound daft but due the the short legs do the dogs ever have issues with the old 5th leg hanging down 😂, and are they any more mild mannered

No 5th leg issues, but do have to correct some people calling them DASHHOUNDS, it's DAKSHUNDT. DAKS (Badger) HUNDT (Hound) ;)

I always think it's crazy to worry about the cost of a puppy and let it effect decision making when buying. It's so insignificant across a dog's life. Especially if you're using it for your favourite hobby/sport, what is £100 per year of a dog's life, compared to everything else we spend on shooting? Nothing against cross breeds, some of them can be very good, but don't pick a puppy you'll have for, hopefully 12+years, because it was a few hundred pounds cheaper than another.

If you have a Teckel you need to be a very calm and collected individual with a very strong sense of endurance. They are the original gremlin. Good with kids, fairly quiet, very trainable. But be warned, they can change very quickly into the ultimate commited hunter and no amount of recall in them. They have the drive of a coursing cheetah, the voice from hell and an attack mode of a pit bull. However, I have had myriads of terriers and gundogs but none have come close to my love of my little horror. She will follow deer scent literally for miles, come back in her own time and require a tummy rub. The worst thing you could do would be not to have one and miss out on a real ife experience. Two separate illustrations below.
