landy/Hilux

Hi,
Discoverys can be nice vehicles, but I would go for the mk3 hilux pickup every time. The engines will easily go over 200,000 miles with nominal maintenace and are as tough as old boots, as is the transmission, electrics etc. Though you get a bit of body corrosion around the sides of the tub and arches, the chassis never rot, even on 80's examples. They are very simple to work on with a beam axle and there is loads of room to get at stuff - even I can fix them. There is stacks of ground clearance, big tyres fit without a lift kit and there are loads of aftermarket goodies !
They drive very nicely, cruise happily at 60 mph and do about 28 or so to the gallon. Parts are cheap either s/h or from Milner or Roughtrax, who supply pattern bits.
Go for it !

From my experience, 1x series 2A, 1x 110, 2x disco, 1x toy corrola and 1x Landcruiser colorado 1 x Lexus (Toyota)IS200 there is only one choice TOYOTA. If/when Toyotas go wrong the parts are more expensive but last much longer than LR parts.
My current Landcruiser Colorado done 187000 miles and just replaced the original batteries after 14 years (with Toyouta ones, £30 cheaper the Halfords), still has the original exhaust. Yes, i did have a problem with headgasket/cylinder on landcruiser, expensive to repair but worth it. Tows twin axle caravan great, auto box very smooth, unlike disco.
I have no idea how fix cars/engines, but no problem I have a TOYOTA.

i,ve just spent months searching for the right discovery as an all purpose vehicle i.e. shooting, family car and for work aswell. hulix's are good but wanted some creature comforts aswell so went for discovery.stav

I have had 1 land rover and on advice from chiropractor sold it and got Landcruiser end of back problem. Also end of wet feet when it rained, end of having to put on warm clothes to go out in winter because heater didn't really function and end of the smell of damp from condensation and end of taking it to obnoxious Land Rover main dealer who would rather that I didnt bring mud into their pristine service centre and get near their nice shiny Range Rovers and the clients who owned them. Saying that Toyota dealer failed LC at MOT because they could not read number plate as it was muddy! Waiting for new Hilux to come in June.

Solid as a rock, mercedes benz approved & engineered for the US market, pull 3 ton & diesel economy 32mpg. superb manual 4x4 trive train, 175k miles here & no faults ! :smug: No stuck in situation. (good tyre help ) ;)

Man what a rocket! Jeeps are pure shite. The merc engine is the only good thing in it.

Ive got a Ford Ranger twin cab pickup that has 184k on the clock, runs very well, paid £1500 for it. FSH, 6 months MOT, all terrain tyres. Good truck, my mate is on his 2nd in 10 years he likes them so much!

I actually just sold a beautiful grand jeep cherokee, 80k on the clock, but it was v8 4.3l petrol and between roadtax, parking license from the council, tires, upkeep, FUEL!, etc. etc. I just could not justify keeping it. I only got £1.2K for it as well, no one wants something that does 5km per litre:(

apart from being heavy and tricky in mud for that reason, it's the best car I've ever owned, but,,had to go sadly.

tbh, I think that I will need to settle on a disco as the 'inside' boot space for the dogs is going to be paramount in hindsight.

Hello PKL, have been following this thread.I had a 96 Disco for a few years. Rot is a big problem with them. The engine had 166k on it and started first time, economy was 30mpg for general use. As they are a tall heavy vehicle they can just take off under very slippery conditions if speed is inappropriate. All in all a good vehicle to have.

I had a 97 disco that I bought for £900 and sold a year later for £1100. I bought a 2004 double cab hilux after that. Running costs are pretty much the same, the landy was slower but probably more comfy. The hilux is far more reliable if I'm honest. The main reason for the change was that I was scared to drive into forests!

It depends what you want it for? If its just occasional work, just shooting then buy an old vitara. I had two of those and they're the best 4x4 by far!
