Hi
has any one got or used the lansky sharpening system with the rods & honlng bits I was thinking of getting one they not cheap about £50 so would like feed back if worth it at the min I'm using a DC04 but am struggling with the angle & getting a good edge
thanks

Yes, I've got one with the standard stones plus the extra fine and sapphire stones. It does a great job if you are careful setting the blade in the clamp. I sharpen S30V and M390 blades with mine and it's slow going but we get there in the end. With less sophisticated steels its speedy.

i always finish on a piece of balsa rubbed with jewlers rouge. Gets a perfect edge and is good for a quick re-touch without worrying about angles too much.

I've had one for about 20 years and worn-out several stones; it's still my go-to sharpening system, paired with one of the little crossed-stick sharpeners for quickly touching-up an edge. I've also tried various alternatives like the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker, but I find the Lanskey to be better.

I use the Lansky Crock Box system, 2 pairs of different grade ceramic rods which fit into pre drilled holes. I finish off using a double sided strop board and a blade guide. Using these means even I can't get the angles wrong !

Oracle - sorry to hijack but how to you guide the blade on the strop? I too use the 4-rod box and strop and it’s very effective.

Recently got the 5 stone delux box off Amazon and I must admit I'm very impressed. The 20 degree angle seems to sharpen the best and brought my buck, my kitchen knives and my vicnox butchery knives up beautifully. Strop it with a leather belt to finish.

Got stones, pull thrus, a chantry and steels but nothing compares to ease of use and results of the Lansky. A worthy investment.

Loads of u tube vids on them.

Interesting thread.
Im looking for a sharpening system better than my current steel.
This is one on the list but I'm also tempted by the Ken Onion, Worksharp system as it looks fool proof! Which suits me.
Also not wishing to hijack the thread but thoughts would be welcome.

Think I got the blade guide from Emberleaf at a local game fair, but they are available on the net.

Another satisfied Lansky user. Had mine about 20 years now, I bought some extra diamond stones for D2 steel blades. Very reliable system.

not very good at sharpening knives but using the lansky system with the rods and guide my knives are very sharp - there well worth getting think I bought my set on Amazon

That would be where I've gone wrong in the past then. Thanks.

I wish some bugger had told me when I bought my first lansky kit years ago... :D

The other problem with the normal stones is that they dish in the middle with use which changes the effective sharpening angle slightly compared to a flat stone.

The trouble is that the coarse stones get the most use and so you end up in a situation where the finer stones don't polish the edge left by the preceding coarser stone properly...

Had that too, did you? :tiphat: :D

Flatten the worn stones on a diamond stone. I use DMT for my planes & have a worn coarse one that's good enough to reform the ickle Lanskys.

The lansky deluxe 5 stone kit has a wide enough range of stones to make sharpening a well worn blade to a fine edge easy enough but it takes time. A worksmart is way quicker, but more expensive too.
Once you’ve got a decent edge using lansky touching it up takes no time.
I found the answer to getting a really fine edge is the lansky leather strop hone, although they get easily damaged I’m on my second already....https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lansky-Sha...qid=1519457706&sr=8-1&keywords=Lansky+leather

5 Stone Lansky Dlamond Deluxe is what I use on my Boker's (tree brand) brilliant edge! Had to work on them from new just to fine tune the edge's,but with patience they are razor sharp now,but the one on my belt still needs a couple of passes to keep it on song after a few fallow are grassed. Often have to lend it to my mates as theirs don't last the distance! when we are all doing the bizz.

BC.
