Lead restriction proposals - public consultation

The thing is, all such producers are going to have to secure a supply of steel shot (actually soft iron). It's not particularly difficult to make indeed we have one UK producer who has been doing it for quite a few years.

who is the U.K. producer of steel shot?, if you are thinking clay and game / steel shot company, then they only import it from China like everyone else.

Yes I was thinking of Steel Shot Company- The Lead Free Alternative

ABOUT STEEL SHOT COMPANY
One of the first manufacturers of steel shot for cartridge manufacturing - Steel Shot Company Ltd have over 20 years of unrivalled experience in the shotgun manufacturing industry.

But if as you say, it's all made in China, so they aren't actually a manufacturer at-all, then I has mis-informed myself.

Interesting. Nothing I've spotted on the site would rule out that they actually import it from China....

Under 'Steel Shot Benefits' is says 'higher pellet counts due to lower density': true, I guess, for a given mass of pellets of the same diameter; but a benefit?

I have no idea whether the company started off by actually manufacturing the stuff, twenty years ago, but maybe then out-sourced the manufacturing it to China later. Might be ? It's not unusual. If you do look closely you might see, for example:

With 30 years experience in cartridge manufacturing we can ensure we understand our customers needs better than anyone else. We have a UK based warehouse holding stock ready for dispatch to the UK and Europe as well as our manufacturing warehouse and factory for direct orders. This allows our customers the flexibility of forward ordering, as well as fast deliveries from the UK for just in time ordering.

But they are a very private company, owned by "the man". Try looking them up at Companies House. Company number 07087632 should get you started.

For the boss, try Stephen Phillip DALES personal appointments - Find and update company information - GOV.UK

Stephen, at one time owned a steel shot manufacturing company in China, but tells me he sold it a few years back and now just buys and imports the shot.

Stephen know the cartridge business, his dad started Gamebore he himself run gamebore before moving on the Americans own gamebore under the Kent brand.

@Rewulf thank you for the comments.

This thread was started as a heads-up on a public consultation that the Health and Safety Executive will launch this week on restriction proposals for lead ammunition for outdoor recreational shooting in England, Wales and Scotland. This is explained in the OP and the blogs and podcast linked from that.

Perhaps, when you get a chance, you could take the time to look at the OP and read the blogs and listen to the podcast and then how about we discuss any concerns you have and your feedback on the phone?

What are they all doing about biodegradable wads and the five year plan ? @Conor O'Gorman

A range of biodegradable wads has opened the door to a new stream of products and the innovation shown by ammunition manufacturers over the past 2 years has been outstanding, even when facing an uphill battle amid the Covid pandemic.

Search online for "biodegradable shotgun wads" to see all the options and various reviews in sporting press here and abroad.

Thank you for the offer Conor.
My first thought was, it would be a waste of time, BASCs position seems entrenched, committed, you will not do {another} about face on the matter of lead.
However, I will read the blogs, and do some up to date research, and consider a dialogue with you.
To do nothing would be to abandon all hope, and I'm not there yet.

I think that I know a bit about biodegradable wads, thank you. Imperfect yet. Progress is happening. Not sure that BASC forced this. Covid excuses not withstanding (that's another topic for debate).

I shall respond to the consultation, when it opens, soon. As should others.

You have my number, as do I yours, if you want a chat.

Fundamentally, lead is dead,(and rightly so) as far as the shot gunning people are concerned. Has been, obviously, for a couple of decades, but some seem to be a bit slow to catch up.

fundamentally what you rifle shooters should catch up on is it the shot gunning people that keep the industry vibrant and shops open for business.
