Least favourite phrases on SD

Finally, this thread's picked up, and switched into grammar pedantry! I'm with @Dalua

My learning was that you write 'a' or 'an' depending upon how the word is verbalised. How one says it when read aloud.

If it starts with a consonant sound, choose 'a'; if it starts with a noun sound, choose 'an'.
So, it's "an SLR", "an LMG", "a SAM", "an EMP", "an IED", "an MTB", "a USP".......

The classic is hotel, depending if you drop the 'H' when saying the word; "an 'otel" versus "a hotel".

I have no idea why it's "an umbrella" and "a U-boat" though. God I love English.

you dont say a yewm-berella same way you dont say a Uh boat
