Because I started loading in the 70's I am old school and am still using a balance and powder measure. I currently have grandad' s Ideal 55, a Redding , a Forester ,a Lee Perfect Powder Measure, and I bought a Lee Delux Perfect Powder Measure about 6 months ago. All of them will throw ball powders with extreme accuracy but the real test is 'rat turd' size extruded powders like H1000. There is no doubt in my mind the Forester Bench Rest is the best measure for 'rat turds' but both of the Lee measures are almost as good and much simpler to adjust than the Vernier adjuster on the Forester. The Lee measuring tube is set up with a micrometer style adjuster and it is very simple to zero in on the load you are after. Using H1000 I see a variation of about 0.2 grains .
If you have the original Lee Perfect Powder Measure (LPPM) which Is almost all plastic it feels very cheap but delivers great performance. The newer Delux LPPM is mostly metal and has a very solid feel when you throw a charge. The metering chamber is very easy to adjust and is a similar but somewhat more robust design than on the original LPPM. This measure has a single wing nut holding the measuring chamber in the housing. This makes disassembly for cleaning a snap .
Another nice feature of both Lee units is you can rotate the hopper and close the port to the measuring chamber allowing you lift the hopper off without losing any powder and return powder easily to the can. The Delux LPPM also is designed so the hopper can be detached from the hopper cone and is threaded to accept a one pound powder can. This works fine but you can't see the powder level as it drops and I don't usually use that feature.
The only thing I don't care fore on the Delux LPPM is the stand they sell as an accessory. It works but it would be more comfortable to use if it was taller. It will fit in both the RCBS AND Redding Measure Stands which put it at a more comfortable height.
This is a very affordable piece of equipment and really works well. I load a lot of extruded powders and I am very pleased with it's performance. It is priced very competitively as well.
This would be good value for you noobies!!!
