Leupold Customer Service (warranty repair)

Hi all,

Just want to share the exemplary customer service and repair work that was carried out on my Leupold MK4 scope.

I purchased this secondhand, as it is a rare configuration and highly sought after by clone rifle builders outside of the UK due to it being issued on the MK 12 SPR ( 3.5-10x40 LRT, illuminated with M2 turrets).

However, there was dust on the reticle, illumination dial was iffy and it did not focus properly.

Was not too happy about this, and the seller could not explain why it had not been sent back before sale.

Anyway, I registered with Leupold on their website and went through the process of getting it serviced. I was required to post it back to them, insured and tracked, which cost around £30 odd.

After they acknowledged delivery, I was informed that the turnaround target was 8 weeks (on the 13th). However, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a shipping notification on the 22nd and the scope duly arrived today (26th) via UPS. No fees or charges.

They upgraded the illumination turret to the current version with 8 instead of 11 settings, and the strongest setting is daylight visible (although not super bright).

Although you can no longer buy a new MK4, they are still supplying them under contract so spare parts are not too much of a concern.

I'd argue that Leupold offers a very competitive product and service, if we could buy them at US prices I suspect we would see many more Leupolds and a lot fewer Swarovski, S&B etc.

I'll certainly buy again as they are one of the few manufacturers who still make a mil-dot reticle scope, and they are extremely light scopes!

Leupold’s lifetime warranty is exactly that a lifetime warranty. No wonder they are the number 1 selling scope in the US.

Given that the warranty is worldwide I don’t understand why more people don’t use them over here, although prices in the US are a lot cheaper than here.

I suspect the retailers are to blame.

Why promote a product which you only buy once?

Excellent service. I have a couple myself at either end of their price range and they are both excellent scopes - the lifetime warranty makes them a no-brainer!

I’ve got three Leupold scopes and think there bang on! But I’ve always wondered if I had a problem if it was worth the hassle to send them off!! Good to here it is thanks

I use a lot of Leupold scopes, and I rate them highly. I have them on 3 of my rifles for over 15 years. Never had a problem with them. Been in -27c and also in Africa, plus all over the Scottish highlands in all weather. Never had an issue with them, and they are just as good as Zeiss and Swarvo in my opinion. AND they honour their lifetime gaurantee.

I suspect you are right. Hunters in the US are into value for money, probably more so than in Europe where brand seems to be more important, which is why a lot of US hunters are happy to use more budget brands such as Mossberg, Remington, Stoeger, Ruger, etc.

I don't know if its true or not but have heard that in the US shooting time starts at sunrise and stops at sunset and the scopes are made to this requirement as opposed to Europe where its an hour before sunrise and an hour after sunset. This leads to European scopes having better low light capabilities leading to the likes of Swaro being popular. Happy to be agreed with or corrected as its what I have heard from someone or on SD over the time.

I have a Leupold and a Vortex and don't find much difference except the last 10 mins but my policy has been, if I can't see something, I am better off not pulling the trigger. So sticking with the american ones for now as it fits my budget and has lifetime warranty.

I wouldn't generalise.

Even two of the same scopes can perform differently.

Leupold has of late sourced their glass from the 'Far East' (CCP China?), so I would not expect them to compete with a European scope that cost two or three times the price.

In the US you can get a used Leupold for $300 or less. Be crazy not to buy a cheap used one and send it in for a service/repair.

I’ve only ever used Leupolds during daylight at a press event. Using their rangefinders and BDC scopes. They worked well and were clear but I’ve never thought the test of optics is at midday on a bright summer day but in the last half hour of light in the winter. That said it sounds like they looked after the OP well
