Is there a minimum age to sit your level 1,and if so is this to do with using afirearm without a cert on the shooting test, any info would be great cheers boys.

When i sat on the dsc1 coarse a couple of yrs ago there was a 14 yr old lad also sitting the coarse at the same time and the only part of the coarse you would need to have a FAC for would be the shooting part which can be taken using the equivelant of an estate rifle and under supervision i would assume .

They have to have their own Firearm Certificate or be over the age of 18, or the assessments can be conducted if they are participating in a Home Office Approved Rifle club activity.

My son was 13 when he did the Written, Game Meat Hygiene, Visual and Safety Assessments.

He had to wait until he was 14 until he could do the shooting assessment in fact he was 14 years and 2 days old when he passed his DSC1

It could have been your son on the coarse i sat , did you drop him off and wait around for him ? was the coarse ran by Chris Howard and Jan Andrews on the 1st couple of days . April 2010

Monument, the estate rifle condition specifically exempts anyone under the age of 18 from using it, so unless you have your own FAC and rifle, you can't do the shooting test before the age of 18.

Interestingly, this actually can turn up as one of the DSC1 questions, I've been studying for mine and it turns up in the "General Law" section :)

It's my son who wants to take it,he's also a member of the army cadets, where they train with single shot rimmys,I wonder if it could be done in 2 stages with the shooting done later?

If you do it within 3 years, with BDS and at one of their courses there is no retest fee if you haven't taken that module.

We've trained a couple of young lads, are far as the law goes I was under the impression as per advice from a local feo that providing they when 14+ and it was on a range with trained RCO and appropriate insurance that was all you needed for a 'test'.

perhaps some 3rd partie advice is needed, over to David at BASC please and thanks!

Paul, I'm sure David will confirm either way but to shoot a rifle and you are under 18, it either has to be your own rifle or be a member of an approved rifle club shooting a club rifle.

It's taught on the DSC1 and stated in the firearms act.

That under 14's can only shoot a centrefire as a member of a Home office approved club

14-17 can either shoot a centrefire as a member of a Home office approved club or obtain their own FAC

17 upwards either shoot under section 21 or as a member of a club or estate rifle or own FAC

Paul if you have allowed an under 17 to use a centrefire who does not hold an FAC and is not a member of a HO club you both have technically committed a firearms offence.
