Lightweight moderator

Moderators come in two forms
Consumable light ones or those made predominantly from Steel/Titanium

How fast you consume them depends on you
Range use, stripping and cleaning, overbore/magnums, running out of spec etc etc will all accelerate the wear.

There is no free lunch to weight vs longevity vs sound attenuation

As for US mods
Apart from being predominantly eye watering prices compared to NZ/Euro offerings they are often designed for use on Semi Auto platforms, the designs I have seen first hand have much larger bore to calibre tolerances.
That is the first thing that gives away sound attenuation performance.

(I suspect) This stems from the factory threads on many US made rifles that are still not undercut and initially designed for clamp style muzzle brakes.
Doesn’t allow for concentric alignment of a moderator bores, requiring larger bore for any given calibre.

Mods are already creeping into rifle price brackets
I see no reason to accelerate that.

High time we did another moderator review
Will see what we can do

Why doesn’t someone link up with the Americans and start importing there suppressors? We would have a lot more choice…
We dont have need for the same type of suppressors US have developed more sturdy compressors for automatic weapons and the 200$ tax stamp on supressors make americans need a supressor to last as long or longer than they need the rifle to last. With the new regulation in UK/Sweden you can go for light weight, not lasting as long and less expensive no need for a permit.

Titanium doesn't always mean light. And all depends on the quality of the build and the overall sound suppression capability. There has been no mention of the Lawrence mods or the Wildcat Elite Ti yet in this thread which I am surprised about - but they are not the lightest. They are way lighter than steel counterparts. As Ed has said - superlight mods tend to be more consumable items and less able on sound suppression - so you will need to decide which is the most important metric - sound suppression, size (this includes reflex or end-can style), weight, life expectancy, cost, - and work out the compromises on the others - and that will tell you which moderator you will end up with from what is available.

The Lawrence mods we have had are absurdly noisy under test.
Have several here customers have jait handed in
One held together with epoxy inside

The Wildcat one looks well made
Punchy money

As above
Titanium outer shells do not make particularly quiet mods
The metal has a shrill, tinny ring to it
Its also quite brittle when out through hear cycles

Must admit that for stalking I value weight over noise reduction - as long as a single shot is below my pain threshold and adds a degree of recoil reduction I’m happy. My lightest mod is an ASE SL5i - think I’m due an upgrade.

Like the look of A-Tec or the DPT with removable modules.
