Log Splitter

OK, I am thinking of getting a petrol driven log splitter. I have tons of wood to process, a lot on the ground already, and a lot still standing.

I have always split by hand using a Maul, I quite enjoy doing it, I find as you get older you need to keep going, so splitting wood is a great form of exercise. But I have a lot, an awful lot, of wood to process, and looking at it makes me shudder , so I am thinking of getting a splitter to help. I don’t do this for a living, so don’t need anything agricultural.

Thoughts and experiences on what to get please chaps.

Cheers.

Mike.

I‘ve had a Forest Master Duo Cut petrol 7 ton splitter for 5 years. It is a powerful reliable machine for my use which is to keep a wood burning stove supplied. A bit slow though and I have toyed with the idea of a kinetic splitter which seems quicker. Drawback is that most are electric and I split my logs where there is no mains power. There are some petrol ones but more expensive.

Spares for the Forest Master are available and if the engine dies you can get a replacement for £60.

We have an electric one it does the job but awfully slow. Was looking at these for my old man but i've never used the site and can only assume after waiting a month for delivery you have no contact if its wrong, although $100 for a 7ton, let me know if you give it a go. Log Splitter-Log Splitter Manufacturers, Suppliers and Exporters on Alibaba.comForestry Machinery.

We use something like this but as you can see triple the price for electric. Electric LogSplitter 7 Ton Wood Splitter

Maybe this can help

Keep us updated as we're looking for something new to.

I have an Oxdale TM400 splitter that I run off a diesel hydraulic pack. If you get one I would look at the big base version

We split about 10 tonnes of wood this summer with it. It is excellent and will run all day. It could split anything we threw at it.

I can't speak from personal experience, but the Rock Machinery ones get good feedback and the company are apparently good to deal with. Inexpensive also. Similar machines are available under other names but the Rock ones tend to have branded engines.

I use the Oxdale PTO400 powered by a Ferguson! :thumb:

There is some the 10 tonnes can’t split. Hard wood like oak where you sometimes get branches that join the trunk with a twisted up grain pattern... but you aren’t getting through that with an axe either! 😄

Not petrol but I bought one of these bad boys some years ago. Have not looked back. I think they go for about £500.
I do not miss flying chunks of wood shooting off and clanking against the wife's car from the days when I hurled an axe...

I have a Rock 12ton splitter with the Briggs engine. Had it 3 years and hasn’t missed a beat. Chogged through a mountain of wood.
Modified it to single handled operation as the two handle thing is a faf. As said previously. Good company to deal with.

I have electric 7 tonne one , does a great job. You can speed it up by using another log as a ‘filler’ so the piston doesn’t have to go all the way back.

Not a petrol one, but I built my own that runs off the tractor.

Before you buy one, make sure you check the cylinder diameter (head side of the ram) and the working pressure. Bigger rams are not always a sign of higher splitting forces.

I'd go for Oxdale as well. Apart from being very high quality and British made, they have one of the fastest ram cycle times of any hydraulic splitter available. Some of the cheaper domestic splitters are painfully slow. And some insist on retracting the ram completely before extending again, which is like watching paint dry.

I made this a few years ago, it's a real man's man's log splitter. A dozen horses of diesel power and torque, splits logs the size of tree trunks.

I might be selling it. Are you a man's man? :-)

Jack (farmers son) did his chainsaw ticket then cut down a few trees, they hired in a vertical splitter.
It had a very long stroke, he had slabs which were narrow for (small fire) so I was feeding the birds around the house and wandered past.
Threw him that look ( what are you doing ffs lol ) to which he said any better idea's?
Came back with the empty sack and put 2 slabs on the table for the one long stroke.....lol

He shook my hand and said Tim I always learn something off you, sometimes I don't like it lol
