I’ve been wanting to do some long range shooting for a while now but I had no idea about where to go, so I asked my RFD if he could recommend somewhere, he immediately responded by saying call Richard Uttings from sharpshootinguk.com. I called Richard and me and a friend booked up, we’re not young men and we’ve both been stalkers for a long time, our reasoning was that by extending our shooting distances this would give us more confidence to make the shot at realistic stalking distances that we would sometimes question.
We met Richard this week on the Yorkshire Moors and the day started with him explaining some of the smoke and mirrors that are associated with long range shooting and he explained the things that were important and the things that weren’t.
After 1 hour we were checking our muzzle velocities, half an hour later we were checking our first shots at 380 yards. We were both shooting 6.5 x 55 swede and 140gn bullets, and an hour after that we were shooting 2 inch targets at 600 yards, finally we finished our education with us both having the ability to dial in to our scopes to make a single shot hit on a 5 inch gong at 840 yards with a 15mph wind at 4 o’clock. We finished the day shooting rabbits at 500 yards which was second nature after a fantastic day. This wasn’t a course that teaches you hold over after you’ve missed, which isn’t much good if you’re a stalker because at that point your deer is long gone.
If you want to understand your rifle and ammunition and the potential you have with them, book a day on the moors with sharpshootinguk.com it’s not only educational it’s bloody good fun.
I’m now considering a follow up day to fine tune the skills I’ve just learned, imagine the confidence you would have shooting that 200 yard buck when you’ve been shooting gongs at 840 yards and rabbits at 500 yards?
