Long story, went to shoot some goats on a forestry replant, we have had a lot of rain lately so expected the river to have risen and hopefully dropped, well the river had risen about 5 ft due to the 328mm of rain they had, Ford was full off large boulders and about 3 ft of silt on the other side, so decided to try another way in, neighbour farmer has a bridge over the river so went to ask if I could go through his farm, after discussing the weather, meaning of life etc,he gave the go ahead ( most farmers over here are like that).
Managed to get to within 2 kilometre of the goats as the crow flys, un packed my truck rucksack on and away you go. There were pig tracks everywhere, followed the tracks up the first hill about 300 mtrs high, pig tracks still everywhere, got the bino,s out, looked across the next two small valleys, goats about 1500 as the crow flys and a bigger mob about 2.5 k away, as I only had my ruger ranch in 223 with a bushnell 3-9 x40 3200 elite limited edition ( did you like that sound like a pro ) I decided not to take a shot, I leave them shots for the creed more customers.
Well it’s winter here so the temp was Only 18c, so nice walking in shorts and t shirt, anyway I walked parallel to the goats, with dense bush below me , not looking forward to the drop into the next valley and the walk up the next hill, when I noticed the pig tracks had gone, I had just walked through a gully and there was a entrance into some three year old plantings, looking down into the opposite valley, nothing could be seen, then I got this urge to look behind me, there on the hill about 70 yds away was a black
( not a white one) I lent on a fence post and dropped him, the world erupted out of the trees pigs came from everywhere, after four shots they disappeared, four dead pigs, all about 25 kgs, well as I don,t have a psc 1 or 2, I just skinned them on the grass, ( trees are too small to hang pigs on) after skinning, and removing the meat, I sat down for a drink and to eat some mandarins I had picked that morning leaving the meat to cool on the trees.
Well after packing the meat in the rucksack, I headed back to the Ute, the goats will have to wait for another day. Just another northland hunting day, thought you may want to read something different.
