Looking for a gun vice

A small word of warning.

I had what looks to be an identical model vice in my workshop. I loved it, but the thread on the long screw and the “stop” (i.e. under the orange button) are made of poor quality metal, eventually wearing away to the point where it would no longer grip. I had to throw out the vice as it is not designed to be repairable.

Personally I’d not be using it on top of a chest of drawers!
Mine's been working for about 10 years now. But I'm not using it to clamp down things really hard e.g. for metal work.
I stuck some self adhesive felt on the jaws to protect my stocks. It's only use is to fixate my guns during cleaning and I still hold on to the butt whenever I push a tight patch through the bore. So the forces involved are quite moderate. Like I said, this one was cheap and I'm sure there are more professional models on the market.

I have an MTM, but it hardly (if ever) gets used anymore. It's just too cumbersome and bulky. Also, most of my rifles (and some of my shotguns) are set up with either picatinny rails or ARCA rails on the bottom. As such, my cleaning station is my tripod with RRS anvil-30 ballhead, that can take either rail system. I just set it up when needed, tip the ballhead down (so all the oil/patches and gunk can drain out), and commence cleaning, with a box or shop rag on the ground beneath the muzzle. No fuss, no muss.

Similarly, I have machined a plate to mount a generic ARCA mount, as well as mounted a Rem 700 picatinny mount and level to the top. I clamp this into the tripod, level the plate, and then use it to mount scopes into rings. This lets me set up the tripod outside, hang a plumb line 50 yds away, and mount the scope into rings so that the reticle is perfectly aligned up/down. When all set, I remove the rings (with scope) from that mount, and then mount the whole thing onto the destined rifle.

Tri-pods are good for more than just shooting off of, or mounting a spotting scope.

This works great for me, it even have rubber jaw covers included:

It's definitely not the strongest vice in the world but works fine for my needs and ball joint is really useful in getting rifle/pistol in position for cleaning or maintenance. It's also dirt cheap compared to "gun vices" (similar in principle Real Avid Master Gun Vice cost around £400).

Like the look of using a true vice, but scared about scratching my guns. Currently use the big Tipton.

I have stolen the old kitchen dining table and drilled holes in it for my reloading press, so drilling more holes for a proper vice is no problem.

Can anyone spec me a half decent vice and most importantly, the material to line the jaws ? To totally eliminate the possibility of ever scratching a gun stock or metalwork

4mm or more leather jaw protectors. Can be as simple as a pair of off cuts or semi-permanent custom cradle:

Think I would have to cover everything within 0.5m in leather to prevent me damaging rifles and scopes.

Maybe best to stick to Tipton plastic kit for me

Hi
Where abouts are you?
I’d be interested in this
Also how much are you after?
Thanks
Apologies - just seen this.

I have no idea what they cost these days, but £25 plus postage?

I live near the Wiltshire/Oxfordshire border, but won’t be able to post it for a week or so as I am currently travelling for work.

I've got the MTM. It is plastic but sturdy and well made. I am pleased with it and it didn't cost the earth.

I’m looking for a vice, torn between the MTM and the Tipton, anyone know of any going secondhand, or any good deals out there? Cheers.
