Lurchers and stalking

Spaniels vs. lurchers! Is it just me - or would anyone agree that the spaniel might ask you what it can do for you, but you'll almost certainly end up asking the lurcher what you can do for them ;)?

Over the years I've had all sorts of working dogs, terriers, spaniels, Black Lab a greyhound cross wolfhound lurcher. and even a Borzoi that was mustard on foxes. I always fancied a Whippet/Bedlington but never got around to it. I worked with those who had that breed and thought they were brilliant dogs. If I was 10 years younger I'd get one in a flash. (and would possibly call it Flash)!

#metoo old keeper, what I really fancy is a cross between a rock hard Lakeland and a good coursing whippet, commonly known as a Wherrier, a mate had two and they were mustard on rats & rabbits. Maybe one day....
Wherrier? Have you got any photos? What are they like? Thinking of, has anyone ever come across any spaniel/terrier mixes?

Your problem will be finding a hard lakie, better off with a black terrier for the job.

I’ve had 3 spaniels and the best bird dogs out there, if you want it found, they certainly aren’t short on enthusiasm, my small lurcher first cross bedlington , was without a doubt best ferreting dog I’ve ever had, quiet, walks exactly a foot in front of you and didn’t miss a thing , if a rabbit come out of a bolt hole it’s didn’t get very far at all, I had him for 14 years a lovely dog he would have made cracking stalking dog without a doubt

Maybe, there are still good Lakelands out there, with lads digging every weekend.
20 years ago I had a smart black dog with a bit of leg, he would have been fine for the terrier side... Shoulda Woulda Coulda....

Have you ever heard that supposedly back in the day, some terrier got crossed into cocker spaniels?
No that's a new one on me.
My limited understanding is that Springers & Cockers all derived from the same stock, Springers got sent to work on the uplands, and the smaller dogs often got sent down south to flush the Woodcock for the squire.. hence they became known as Cockers after the Woodcock.
I would imagine that before the type got "Fixed" through selective breeding that any good hunting dog would get crossed with another, be it a terrier type or a flushing dog. I had one Lakeland terrier that was a fantastic above ground worker, many times at the end of a drive on a day's beating a gun would come up to me to ask what the dog was as she worked so well, better than any spaniel or Labrador.

From my experience with them, I’d there not consistent enough nowadays. There’s too many pretty lakies about that never seen work. My last lakie was average from very good stuff. Plus, you’re not going to get too many offers off lads with decent stuff, closed circles and all that.
Black terriers are the way to go if you want to dig them consistently.

I've a bull whippet cross that's dynamite on deer

How has your rabbiting season gone this year? You still have your Saluki types :)
Still got her yeah and bringing a pup on for next season out of my old line. It's gone OK to be fair in between patches of mixy and then the bad snow laying for nearly 3 week. Just been out to feed up and the ferrets are tied so I'm just about done now bar lamping and shooting for another few week

The pups showing decent signs but only a baby still at 8 month

We have a saluki cross family dog, (a rescue 5 yrs ago), he's got a better nose than my first lab had, it's up in the air ....with 2 seconds to spare before there's just a tail left disappearing into the trees, so he's on the lead. I have taken him out to track scent trail , as he's my fall back plan when the day comes I get a runner .
