Lynx spotted in the highlands?

I was shooting with a Swedish chap a few years ago. He had a dream job, government employee in the north of Sweden. Kind of a ranger. His job was to survey / monitor the big predators ‘on the ground’ so to speak. Huge area to work in, but had the best toys to get there. Most of the job was looking for foot prints in the snow, of woldverine, Lynx, wolf and bear. He had seen them all in the flesh, some more often than others, but only set eyes on Lynx twice in a number of years.

Seen that......so humanised it's unreal !
Whoever did this needs traced and book thrown at them on grounds of neflect / cruelty and of course the unlicensed release side of things

Just a curiosity - but how would an animal like a lynx be construed in the wild?

Are they fully protected even though extinct in the wild?
Are they unprotected since they have no status?

I ask because we run into similar issues here. In some states, if an animal is not listed as a game species, it cannot be taken. In other states, if it is not listed as a protected or game species then it is completely unprotected.

As an example I think of a situation last year. A friend had an elk show up twice below his high seat, in a state that did not have an elk population and therefore it was unprotected. After checking legality, he **** it when it showed a third time.

No legal status at the moment, but with a public opinion and political bias toward protection.

This was the grey area exploited when people illegally released beavers 12-15 years ago. In the time it took the government to make up its mind how to classify them, they multiplied and established, to the point where public opinion made it impossible to mandate eradication.

Beavers getting reintroduced legally now but nature scot handing out licences to have them shot / removed ... it's happening more than folk realise... and after seeing evidence from one controller I never realised how big an animal they are !!!

I believe it would be Effectively classed as an alien / invasive species- so not granted automatic protection under law. The Extinction of lynx pre dates any laws relating to wider flora & fauna protection in Scotland.

Beavers were the same, and until granted protection, could be shot without license and any season applicable as an invasive/ non native species.

If the person responsible was truly interested in establishing a free-living population of lynx in Scotland they'd have released them in an area of impenetrable forest, miles from any human interference.

***conspiracy theory alert***
These semi-tame and easily recaptured lynx are just a blind to distract the authorities attention from the simultaneous release of dozens of truly wild lynx that's secretly taking place all over Scotland as we speak....

(I just made that up, btw).

Lynx night active. Only seen a few through the years. About 2000 here in Sweden. About 200 to be shot starting 1 mars.

News updates, another pair in the same area have now been “ spotted” it’s on the BBC so must be a fact. There must be glut of them in captivity by the sound of it

Take this as you will but on a deer stalking FB group that these lymx releases in the area ... it's not the forst time it's happened 🤔 according to " locals"

If another tame pair are captured, it should be fairly straightforward for Police Scotland to speak to "locals", and ascertain the source of the release.
