Magnum action

I'm looking at building a rifle soon but can't decide on what action to go for.. I want to build a 300 win mag.. I want my rifle action to be stiff but smooth like an AI action.. Not interested In a loose tikka/ sako type style action. What action would you guys recommend?

Right well the overall build will be a compromise then. I'm presuming you have a weight, length etc in mind.
I'd say a nice Mauser style action (parker-hale, CZ 550, ruger M77, Winchester Model 70) in the correct length would suit you lovely.
I don't really get what you mean bout loose sako/tikka action. Very rarely a bad sako or tikka.

Also, without being to pedantic, it's stalking not hunting when it comes to deer or boar in the UK. I just like the traditional stuff s'all :)

I'm well aware of the terminology thank you.. And if you have cycled an AI action then go to a tikka/ sako you will understands what I mean. I won't a smooth action with very high tolerances. An sako action is good but I don't the the loose floppy feel of the bolt

No worries slickshot, I didn't mean to call into question your expertise. I apologise it it came across that way.

Anyway, back to rifles. I couldn't agree more. The AI is a wonderful action but it's a little on the heavy side. Maybe a aftermarket action built around the rem 700 footprint would do? Plenty of aftermarket stuff to add for the upcoming build and the tolerances should be up there with AI although I admit it wouldn't be as Gucci feeling, closer though.

It's cool I will have to do my research.. May just buy a used remington 700 sendero and build of that! Regards to the wssm I'm not really interested as I want to push those 208 amax at 3000 fps and that's a bit heavy for the short mag

Hi Slickshot.
What is your Budget? Devon Custom Rifles are not far from you and make their own Actions. You could perhaps pop down for a look? They will be made to much tighter tolerances than a Factory Action.
Hope this helps :-D.

Some stalking grounds don't welcome tight tolerance equipment, ever been down on your face in the Spaggy muck?(unintentionally), try getting off a shot on that beast u spied a while back when your kit is full of crud, I have Sako's and Remmy's, think a Sendero would be a little more sloppy in the action tho'.:D

Very true, also consider your trigger unit, Jewells are good but not tolerant of dust/debris. I have gone away from the Jewell to the now hard to find CG trigger. Timney may also be a good choice for a stalking rifle. My remmie sendero that I am using for my 7mm RM build is nowhere near as slick an action as my Tikka 595 actions

Not so sure that remmy...sendero..&...slick have been used in the same sentence before.

Slick , Maybe not, no deffo not!, but a seriously good rifle all the same...............:tiphat:

OH! & Slick only needs a slight alteration to turn it into SICK!!!!!, see CRUD:D

Hmmmm maybe that is a huge advantage of a tight slick action.... You know instantly that there is some crud/***** in there... and can do something about it before pulling the trigger. Whereas with a slack action you could be pulling the trigger not knowing there was a potential problem!

The above is me trying yet again to justify the use of custom actions to myself !!

Regards

Ed

If the bolt closes on a round, as usual, & the feel is good, that round is going to be dispatched, the "sloppy" bit before the bolt lugs close up, has no bearing on my thoughts.. maybe just be a little more gentle to reduce any noise that might spook a quarry animal.............. go stalk a bit more?

Whilst precise tight tolerances are pleasing, the only part of the action fit that matters is where the bolt lugs lock into the receiver.

Everything rearwards of the lugs is pretty much irrelevant.

In fact if the bolt lugs are not fitted to microscopic tolerances, even lapped, then some slop in the bolt may be desirable.

Savage intentionally "float" the bolt head so that it can align itself. And have a reputation for being one of the more accurate mass produced rifles.

Blasers don't even have a receiver as such. The bolt head with its collet lockup is all that takes the thrust, which has great technical merit IMHO compared with the traditional bolt. And I've never heard anyone criticise Blasers for poor accuracy.

You can buy Savage actions to build a semicustom, they have been used in F class with good results.

They might not be the prettiest things, but they do work.
