Maize harvest in August

I sat in a combine yesterday afternoon. Wheat coming off at 13.5%. Yield was mediocre.
Appears they are planning to start cutting maize in 10 days. That's about 6 weeks early!
It went in a month early and has done OK on heavier ground. Late planted maize is not looking very good at all.
30 mm of rain two weeks ago may have saved some of it. However it was v localised.

Maize for the corn or whole crop for silage?

1 has 2 days (borage) to go all the rest finished 5 days ago.
1 said said can you hardface the points/shins..."I said I wanted to do that in the winter"

Whole crop silage.
All wheat stubble are being cultivated and the plan is to drill with grass seed as soon as rain is forecast. Desperately short of feed for v big dairy herd.

With new varieties of maize for silage, harvesting dates are getting earlier, in the 80s we harvested in late September/ October , with crops being left due to sodden ground, there was always a rush to be first to combine some wheat before the royal show, always hay in June, three cuts of silage the last in September, remember the drought of 76, we were all doomed.

Only one cut of both hay and silage this year. Most local cattle have been brought in as there is no grass. Early planted maize is not too bad, but the later crops are looking poor.

Cereals have been surprisingly good, as was the rape. Most local farmers are worried about the winter feed costs

This year hay made in May. 90% wheat cut before end of July.
Silage crops just dreadful. Looks like some spring barley will not have any grain in the ears.
