Massive Welsh Fallow

And a happy Christmas to you Choz.

You will find that in some areas in Sutherland county in Scotland that during discussions about deer, Sika Stags are often refered to as Sika Bucks, and most of my American clients call everything a Buck. It is a term that you will find is often used in Africa, where some animals are Bucks and others are Bulls. Impala are Bucks Nyala are Bulls, strictly speaking.

But Sika are Stags and not Bucks which you are correct about. Sorry if I seemed a bit pi--ed but we have had a Troll on here who is very much like a fart in a spacesuit. A job to get rid of and unwelcome!! And one is never sure if he is back again under another name. But there you go, there are some sad ****s out there.

Hope your season is going well, sounds as though you had a good time north of the border. Well done.

Rest assured sikamalc I am not the fart in a spacesuit nor am I the **** to which you refer to as the troll, I try and respect the views of others, god knows I have enough views of my own, but as you have now pointed out the term Buck is used as the norm in some areas of sutherland, my curiosity is now satisfied, thank you :-D

The Mole,
The munty I shot in 93 was 32lb SKINNED, don`t know what he was live weight but I would guess at about 55 - 60lbs he was MASSIVE

geoshot,
Venison in order of prefrence,
Fallow, or Red calf, Sika hinds, Muntjac, Red hind, CWD sweet smelling and well marbled with fat throughout, easiest of the lot to skin just as easy as skinning a rabbit honestly, Roe

Yes the Roe Stag..eeer bucks are very fine on your patch in Sussex Sikamalc and there are plenty of those Roe Jills too! I hope to get a Muntjac ram next time I'm down there or at least a couple of CWD Drakes!

Anyway seriously what do we all call a young Roe, Kid or Fawn? I'm told offically its Kid but I've heard them called Fawn and even calf! :???: Again I think its where you are in the country.

Eejit - it's muntjac boar (& sow).

As any fule kno.

Errr wrong again, sorry it should be a Ram for an Impala. Reedbuck, Springbuck, a Buck, and anything bigger is usually a Bull.

Must be my age

See what tttoooo muche Whiskyeee canann dooooooooooooo fiurr youuu

Bit off thread but I reckon fillet from any of the deer I have tasted is pretty acceptable to fantastic.
Order of preference after that
Muntjac
Fallow and Sika joint second
Roe, unless it's a very young doe then it's second
Red last, but as I've only ever had cull beasts, that's maybe an unfair comparison.
Never tasted CWD, but I hear they are really tasty.
On the subject of names, a landowner recently asked me to get rid of a couple of fallow "stags" for her, I think her only exposure to deer was when they attacked her orchard and via Bill Oddity, so her confusion was understandable.
I respect sikamalc, but I'm with choz on this one. Call them what they're meant to be or just admit defeat and use male or female and lose the tradition.

I was once on a pheasant day in Buckinghamshire where the shooting lunch was venison stew with five different types of venison, all but one shot locally: red, fallow, roe, muntjac and CWD.

I rate muntjac fairly highly as venison being less gamey than most and we had absolutely no problem shifting carcasses, the local Chinese took everything we had. After muntjac it's hard to beat a nice September fallow pricket.

CWD for desert then can't be bad
